The New England Patriots strengthened their quarterback depth chart by claiming former New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito off waivers. DeVito, who gained attention as an underdog success story after going undrafted in 2023, now joins rookie starter Drake Maye and veteran backup Joshua Dobbs. The Patriots had been searching for a third quarterback after parting ways with undrafted rookie Ben Wooldridge last week.

Tommy DeVito Impresses Patriots In Preseason, Giants Lose Quarterback To Roster Depth

DeVito impressed the Patriots firsthand during the preseason finale, completing 17 of 20 passes for 198 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions against New England’s reserves. Head coach Mike Vrabel emphasized that the acquisition was about strengthening the roster overall, not dissatisfaction with current quarterbacks. He also praised Dobbs for settling in during preseason play despite some early practice mistakes.

The Giants, already stocked at quarterback with Russell Wilson, first-round pick Jaxson Dart, and veteran Jameis Winston, were unable to keep DeVito on their roster. Giants general manager Joe Schoen acknowledged that roster balance made it difficult to retain him, expressing support for DeVito’s next opportunity in New England. DeVito himself noted that as an undrafted player, every game is an audition for all 32 NFL teams.

Patriots Release Veteran Receiver Kendrick Bourne, 49ers Reportedly Interested In Reunion

To make room for DeVito, the Patriots released veteran wide receiver Kendrick Bourne. The nine-year veteran had not practiced since August 1 due to an injury but was nearing a return. Bourne’s release was anticipated after New England kept eight receivers on its initial 53-man roster, an unusually high number. Teams such as the Vikings and 49ers had shown interest in him, with San Francisco reportedly “very interested” in a reunion.

Bourne leaves the Patriots with 292 receptions, 3,714 yards, and 22 touchdowns over his career. His best season came in 2021 under then-offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, when he posted 55 catches for 800 yards and five touchdowns. Though New England valued his versatility, his injury and roster competition led to his release. The 49ers, dealing with depth issues at wide receiver, could be a likely landing spot for Bourne as he enters the next phase of his career.
