Kenny Easley, the legendary Seattle Seahawks safety famed for his punishing style and profound influence on the game, died Friday evening at the age of 66. Widely regarded as one of the most formidable defenders of his era, Easley left a lasting imprint on both the franchise and the NFL during his seven-year career.
A Dominant Defensive Force Whose Impact Earned League Honors and Lasting Recognition
Selected fourth in the 1981 draft out of UCLA, Easley quickly emerged as a dominant defensive force. He earned five Pro Bowl selections, three first-team All-Pro honors, and became the AFC Defensive Player of the Year in 1984 after leading the league with 10 interceptions. Nicknamed “The Enforcer,” he built a reputation for fearless hits and impeccable instincts, earning a place on the 1980s All-Decade Team. His illustrious career later earned him induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017.

The Seahawks paid tribute with a statement celebrating Easley’s leadership, toughness, and unrelenting intensity. The team honored him further by changing its X account avatar to display his name and retired No. 45. Hall of Fame president Jim Porter praised Easley’s unique combination of ball skills and physicality, noting his ability to deliver punishing tackles that left a lasting impression on opponents.
A Career Cut Short but Followed by Healing, Honor, and Lasting Legacy
Easley’s playing days ended after the 1987 season due to a severe kidney ailment. He later filed a lawsuit against the Seahawks, alleging that team-prescribed medication contributed to the damage. The matter was settled out of court. A renewed relationship began in 2002 when owner Paul Allen reached out, leading to Easley’s induction into the Seahawks Ring of Honor and recognition as one of the 50 greatest players in franchise history.
Remembered as a man of faith and a beloved member of the Seahawks family, Easley’s legacy continues to inspire generations of fans. The organization extended heartfelt condolences to his wife, Gail, and his children, Kendrick, Gabrielle, and Giordanna.
