As late February arrives, the Cleveland Browns find themselves facing a significant offseason filled with important roster decisions. While quarterback is typically the most scrutinized position in football, it is not currently the organization’s most urgent concern. Cleveland has time to evaluate its options at quarterback, but several other roster areas demand more immediate attention.
The Browns enter 2026 with multiple quarterbacks under contract and no clear-cut starter. Shedeur Sanders returns for his second season after starting seven games as a rookie fifth-round selection. His initial stretch as a starter featured predictable inconsistency, yet he displayed enough promise to remain a serious contender for the job. Sanders improved from his first start to his seventh, showing growth in decision-making and playmaking ability.
Quarterback Depth, Watson’s Future, And Offensive Line Questions Dominate Cleveland’s Offseason
Third-round pick Dillon Gabriel is also under contract and provides another developmental option within the system. In addition, Deshaun Watson remains part of the equation. Cleveland signed Watson to a fully guaranteed 230 million dollar contract in 2022, and he is working to return from an extended absence. The 2026 season represents the final year of that deal, and the organization has not ruled out the possibility that he could compete for the starting role.

General manager Andrew Berry emphasized patience when speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. He noted that it is still early in the offseason and reiterated the team’s commitment to competition at every position. Berry stated that every player on the roster is expected to compete, including quarterbacks. He also highlighted Watson’s effort behind the scenes, praising his dedication during recovery. With new head coach Todd Monken settling in, Cleveland has time to evaluate its options before on-field workouts begin.
Despite the intrigue surrounding the quarterback room, the Browns have more pressing concerns. The offensive line could see major turnover. If veteran guard Joel Bitonio retires, Cleveland might lose as many as four of its five starters from last season. Dawand Jones, who struggled before suffering a season-ending injury in 2025, could be the only returning starter. Rebuilding the offensive line is essential, as stability up front will directly impact whoever earns the quarterback job.
Passing Game Needs And Quarterback Competition Shape Browns’ Offseason Plans
The Browns also need additional playmakers in the passing game. The wide receiver group requires reinforcements, and with David Njoku expected to depart in free agency, tight end becomes another priority. Pairing rookie standout Harold Fannin Jr. with another reliable option could help maintain balance in the offense and support the development of the quarterback.
Even so, the quarterback will remain the central storyline. Sanders showed growth late in his rookie season, improving his efficiency and reducing risky throws while still creating plays outside of structure. According to Berry, the next steps for Sanders involve mastering the new offensive system, building chemistry with the coaching staff, and continuing his physical development before training camp. If he makes meaningful strides, he could secure the starting role by summer.
At the same time, Watson’s potential return adds uncertainty and intrigue. The Browns appear open to every possible outcome. Performance, preparation, and roster construction will ultimately determine who leads the offense in 2026.
