Nebraska continued its surprising NCAA tournament run with a dramatic 74-72 victory over No. 5 Vanderbilt on Saturday night in Oklahoma City, securing a spot in the Sweet 16. In front of a pro-Cornhuskers crowd, the No. 4 seed survived a frantic finish, including a near-miracle half-court heave from Vanderbilt’s Tyler Tanner that rattled in and out at the buzzer. Backup guard Braden Frager delivered the decisive go-ahead layup with 2.2 seconds left, giving Nebraska the lead that would hold until the final horn.
Vanderbilt’s Second-Half Rally Falls Short Against Nebraska’s Composed Late-Game Execution and Balanced Scoring
Vanderbilt had fought back from a 39-32 halftime deficit, using dominance on the offensive glass to create second-chance opportunities and take their first lead late in the game. The Commodores traded blows with Nebraska down the stretch, but the Cornhuskers’ late-game composure proved crucial. Frager’s game-winner, paired with strong contributions from Pryce Sandfort and three other double-figure scorers, cemented the win despite Tanner’s 27-point effort.

The victory marks only Nebraska’s second NCAA tournament win in program history, after defeating Troy in the first round. Prior to this tournament, the Cornhuskers had gone 0-8 in NCAA tournament play, making them the last power conference team without a tournament victory. Under seventh-year coach Fred Hoiberg, Nebraska has transformed into one of the country’s top teams, starting the season 20-0 and ranking in the top 14 nationally in NET, WAB, and KenPom metrics.
Nebraska Survives Intense Vanderbilt Battle, Now Eyes Historic Final Four Run
Both teams lived up to expectations in a heavyweight matchup. Nebraska shot an efficient 57% from the floor and 47% from three-point range (9-of-19), while Vanderbilt’s second-half offensive rebounding kept the game competitive. Nebraska regained the lead at 68-67 with just over two minutes remaining, setting the stage for a tense finish.
With this win, Nebraska is now two victories away from the Final Four and four wins shy of completing a historic and unexpected championship run. Their combination of shooting efficiency, balanced scoring, and late-game poise demonstrates that their success is no fluke, as they continue to defy expectations and write a new chapter in Cornhuskers basketball history.
