In an exclusive interview, Storm Hunter discussed the potential of Saudi Arabia hosting the WTA Finals, drawing attention to Aryna Sabalenka’s participation in the Riyadh Season Tennis Cup in December 2023 alongside Ons Jabeur.

The idea of Saudi Arabia hosting the prestigious WTA Finals has sparked debate, particularly within women’s tennis circles. While former champions like Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova have expressed skepticism, current players such as Sabalenka and Jabeur have shown openness to the concept.

Hunter, who is currently competing in the Mumbai Open, shared her perspective on the matter after securing victory in her Round of 16 match against Laura Pigossi from Brazil.

“I believe in promoting the game of tennis across different countries and regions worldwide. It’s crucial for the growth of women’s tennis,” said Hunter, expressing her support for expanding the sport’s reach.

Acknowledging the controversy surrounding Saudi Arabia’s hosting due to concerns about women’s rights, Hunter pointed to Sabalenka’s positive experience in Riyadh last year.

“Aryna Sabalenka played there and had a great time. She mentioned feeling comfortable and appreciated the hospitality. So, I’m optimistic they can organize a successful event,” Hunter remarked, drawing on Sabalenka’s feedback.

Concluding her thoughts on the matter, Hunter emphasized the importance of ensuring that players feel welcomed and secure regardless of the event’s location.

“Ultimately, it’s essential that players feel welcome and safe wherever they compete,” Hunter concluded.
