José Mourinho delivered a memorable response when questioned about Neymar’s status compared to Brazilian legend Pele.

In 2019, Brazilian football magazine Placar hailed Neymar as the greatest player from Brazil since Pele, the iconic figure who clinched three World Cup titles during his illustrious career.

Neymar holds the record as Brazil’s top scorer, netting 79 international goals—two more than Pele achieved.

The 32-year-old made a significant impact in European football while representing Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. Placar’s declaration stirred controversy, prompting Mourinho to offer his perspective, highlighting the accomplishments of Ronaldo Nazario and Rivaldo.

Mourinho emphasized the achievements of Ronaldo, who excelled at clubs like PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid, along with Rivaldo, who claimed league titles in Spain and Italy, as well as the Champions League with AC Milan.

While acknowledging Neymar’s talent and immediate success in Europe, Mourinho emphasized the contributions of past Brazilian greats like Ronaldo and Rivaldo, who not only excelled in European clubs but also experienced success during pivotal moments in Brazil’s football history.

Neymar’s career highlights include two league titles, three Copa del Rey triumphs, and a Champions League victory during his time at Barcelona, along with five league titles at PSG before he moved to Al Hilal in the Middle East.

However, his international achievements are limited to winning the Confederations Cup, unlike Pele, who secured three World Cup titles in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

Former US Men’s National Team (USMNT) forward Taylor Twellman expressed his belief that Gio Reyna would have been better off moving to a La Liga club instead of joining Nottingham Forest on loan in January.

Reyna struggled to secure regular playing time at Borussia Dortmund this season, starting just once in 15 Bundesliga appearances. This trend continued from the previous season, during which he started only four league games and seven across all competitions.

As a result, Reyna departed Dortmund on loan during the winter transfer window. Despite being linked to Sevilla as late as January (via ESPN), the USMNT talent ultimately ended up at Forest, who currently sit 16th in the Premier League, just two points clear of the relegation zone.

Speaking on Alexi Lalas’ State of the Union podcast, Twellman expressed concern about Reyna’s decision, stating (as quoted by GOAL):

“I am concerned. I’m concerned for multiple reasons. One, you change representation. When you change representation, obviously your contacts change. Who’s now representing him [Gio Reyna]? That isn’t really public. I’d be intrigued to know who’s representing him.

“If you’re really leaving Dortmund for Forest when six weeks before that, four months before that, Sevilla was the one that everyone was telling me ‘That’s where he’s going to end up.’ I get it, they’re in a relegation battle, but La Liga suits Giovanni Reyna. A relegation battle in the English Premier League does not suit Giovanni Reyna.

I don’t care who you are and who’s trying to convince me of that – that’s not going to work.”

Twellman expressed his hope that the move will prove successful, especially with the USMNT set to host the Copa America this summer:

“I hope I’m wrong because that means it helps Gio, it helps the USMNT, but I feel like when we are previewing the Copa America, I think we are going to have the same conversation – where is Gio going to end up, what’s his best team, can he play in a system that doesn’t suit a 10, someone that is going to contribute on both sides?

“I think we are going to be having this conversation in four months, unfortunately, but I hope I’m wrong.”

Reyna did not feature in the USMNT’s latest fixture, a 1-0 defeat to Slovenia in a friendly fixture last month. However, he played in both legs of their CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal against Trinidad and Tobago in November, scoring once as his team won 4-2 on aggregate.

Juventus is reportedly keeping a close eye on Toni Kroos’ situation at Real Madrid as the experienced German midfielder nears the end of his contract.

According to La Stampa (via Get Football News Italy), Kroos is seen as a “dream signing” for the Old Lady this summer. With his current contract set to expire in June and no extension agreed upon with the La Liga outfit, Juventus sees an opportunity to secure his services.

Despite the presence of a competitive midfield at Real Madrid, Kroos has remained a key figure under Carlo Ancelotti this season, featuring in 32 matches across various competitions. His contributions include one goal and seven assists.

Since joining from Bayern Munich in July 2014, Kroos has been an integral part of the Santiago Bernabeu setup, amassing an impressive tally of 449 appearances and clinching 21 major trophies with Los Blancos.

Juventus is actively seeking midfield reinforcements, with Kroos featuring prominently on their shortlist alongside Arsenal’s Jorginho, whose contract also expires this summer, although Arsenal has an option for a one-year extension.

However, convincing Kroos to make the switch to the Allianz Stadium may require some effort. Reports suggest that the veteran midfielder is contemplating retirement at Real Madrid before pursuing personal endeavors.

Real Madrid might offer him an extension to stay for another season, having secured a new one-year deal for him last summer.

José Mourinho has unveiled what he considers to be the pinnacle of his tactical achievements, a moment that often slips the memory of many football enthusiasts.

Mourinho’s managerial journey began in 2000 with a brief stint at Benfica, but it was his time at Porto, marked by a Champions League victory in 2004, that propelled him into the spotlight and attracted the attention of Chelsea.

Since then, Mourinho has hoisted trophies at every club he’s managed, except Tottenham, but finds himself presently without a position after his recent dismissal from Roma.

During an appearance on the Vibe with FIVE podcast hosted by former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, the 61-year-old delved into one of his most significant football moments: Inter Milan’s triumph over Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona in the 2010 Champions League semi-final.

In a tactical masterpiece at Camp Nou, Mourinho’s Inter held off the Catalan giants, despite playing with 10 men for the majority of the match, securing a 1-0 victory and progressing to the final on aggregate, etching one of the modern era’s greatest triumphs.

However, Mourinho believes an even greater accomplishment preceded that infamous second leg — the first leg of the semi-final.

“No, because the first one when we beat Barcelona 3-1 was better. And people forget it,” Mourinho remarked.

“It was 3-1, and it could have been four or five. That was the match that took us to the final. And the second leg was a consequence of the first.”

In the first leg at the San Siro, Barcelona took the lead with Pedro’s goal in the 19th minute. However, Inter, spurred by Wesley Sneijder’s equalizer before halftime, rallied to secure a 3-1 victory, with Maicon and Diego Milito adding to the scoresheet.

Despite the potential for a more significant margin, the 3-1 win ultimately proved to be all Inter needed to advance.
