Big-man touchdown: Cardinals lineman Jonah Williams scores his first TD since middle school

Everyone loves a touchdown by a big guy, and Jonah Williams is no exception.

The Arizona offensive tackle was in the right spot at the right time on Sunday, scoring his first touchdown since sixth grade during the Cardinals’ 30-17 win over the New England Patriots.

“That’s what I tried to do — I planned it, I practiced it,” Williams said, humorously. “It’s such a random play to get so much praise for.”

Williams earned the praise.

The starting right tackle was listed as questionable with an illness after what he called a tough night. Arizona’s trainers helped him recover enough to play, and the 6-foot-5, 312-pound player made one of the most important plays of the game.

Leading 3-0 late in the first quarter, the Cardinals drove the ball to New England’s 8-yard line. Arizona wide receiver Greg Dortch took a handoff and tried to reach the goal line, but fumbled while being tackled.

Williams, who had pulled from his right tackle spot, collided with Patriots defensive lineman Daniel Ekuale as he ran to the left side. He kept moving and jumped on the ball just before it rolled out of the end zone, preventing a touchback that could have been a crushing blow to the Cardinals’ hopes.

Jonah Williams recovers a fumble for a touchdown in the 1st half

Williams hesitated at first during his celebration, as officials were determining if he had recovered the ball in time. He finally celebrated after teammate Paris Johnson Jr. confirmed it was indeed a touchdown.

“I was like, what? How’s that work?” Williams said.

It’s understandable that Williams didn’t know how it felt, given it had been a long time since his last touchdown.

The last time? When he was playing for the Atlanta Colts at Murphey Candler Park in Georgia.

“I remember the hole opened up, it was 30-trap, the center climbed the linebacker, and I just hid behind him,” Williams said with a smile. “I almost got hogged by a nose guard — it was really embarrassing. That’s probably why it was my last chance to run the ball.”

Williams has not run the ball in years, but this first NFL touchdown was a nice reward for a player who has spent much of his career blocking in the trenches.

Williams grew up in Georgia before moving to Northern California in ninth grade. He was a five-star recruit out of Folsom High School and played three years at Alabama, earning third-team All-America honors before entering the NFL.

James Conner runs with the ball in the 1st half

The Bengals selected him 11th overall in the 2019 draft, but a shoulder injury ruined his rookie season. He started 10 games in 2020 before suffering a knee injury but became a mainstay on Cincinnati’s offensive line, starting 49 games over the next three seasons.

Williams signed a two-year deal with the Cardinals during the offseason but suffered another knee injury that kept him out for nine games. He returned to play on Nov. 24 against Seattle and has started the last four games, making a crucial play against the Patriots that keeps Arizona’s slim playoff hopes alive.

“That was an excellent play by him, just maxing out effort,” said Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon.

It’s a play Williams will certainly remember, especially since Arizona’s equipment staff saved the ball, perhaps to sit next to the one from his sixth-grade touchdown.

“I kept that one forever,” Williams said. “That’s my pride and joy.”

Williams may have been joking about the sixth-grade ball, but his first NFL touchdown will definitely have a place of honor, whether on a mantle or somewhere special.

The Lions’ injury-riddled defense struggled to keep up with the high-scoring Bills led by Allen, resulting in a 48-42 defeat

The Detroit Lions had no way to stop Josh Allen.

Now, they are hoping their injured defense can at least stop other teams.

Detroit’s already weakened defense got even more hurt in their 48-42 loss to Allen and the Buffalo Bills on Sunday, with three key players possibly suffering season-ending injuries.

Defensive tackle Alim McNeill hurt his knee, cornerback Carlton Davis III left with a jaw injury, and backup cornerback and important special teams player Khalil Dorsey broke his right leg, which Coach Dan Campbell said was similar to Aidan Hutchinson’s season-ending injury.

“We’ll know more about Alim and (Davis) tomorrow, but I don’t feel good about either one of those guys,” Campbell said. “If I’m saying I don’t feel good about an injury, that means not good for the rest of the season.”

The Lions have more players on injured reserve than any other team in the NFL, and many of them are on defense. They’ve managed to play without Hutchinson, the league’s top pass rusher, but Allen showed how much the defense is struggling.

James Cook runs with the ball in the 1st half

Not only did the Lions fail to sack Allen, but they barely pressured him at all. They only had three quarterback hits, while Allen threw for a season-high 362 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 68 yards and two more scores.

“He poses a huge issue for any team, and we knew that was going to happen,” Campbell said. “We wanted to handle him better and we just didn’t. When he makes a play, I can live with it, but what is frustrating is all the self-inflicted wounds.

“You can’t give that team anything, and I feel like we helped them a little bit.”

Buffalo’s 48 points and 559 yards don’t even show everything because Tyler Bass missed a 24-yard field goal that could have put the Bills over 50 points. This came after Buffalo lost 44-42 to the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday.

“We knew they were going to be ready to go after that tough loss out there on the West Coast,” Campbell said. “They had that urgency and we just didn’t match it. That’s on me. I didn’t have those guys ready to go for a game like that. We have a lot of guys who can play better than that, and that’s my job.”

Looking at the final score, the Lions’ offense didn’t seem that bad, with 521 total yards, including 494 from Jared Goff, losing by just six points.

James Cook in the 1st half

Goff threw for 333 yards in the second half, but Detroit only gained seven yards rushing. Detroit was trailing 38-21 early in the fourth quarter and was still behind by two scores until they scored their final touchdown with 16 seconds left.

“If we had been able to play like that at the start of the game, maybe we would have stayed closer for the first three quarters,” Goff said. “It probably wouldn’t have felt quite so much like garbage time there at the end.

“They punched us in the mouth early and it took us too long to respond.”

Goff believes the game could still be useful in the future.

“We would have loved to win out, including the Super Bowl, but that didn’t happen,” he said. “I hope we can look back on this as a good lesson and use what we learn to win the next three games.”

The Chargers collapse in a poor second half, ending with Herbert’s first interception in three months

By the time Justin Herbert threw his first interception in exactly three months late in the third quarter, the Los Angeles Chargers’ second half against Tampa Bay was already falling apart.

The Chargers never recovered in the Buccaneers’ 40-17 win on Sunday. What started as an encouraging day quickly turned into a disaster, reminding everyone of the struggles the team has faced in recent seasons.

“You go through a game like this, and it’s tough,” Herbert said. “We got beat badly, and we have to do everything we can to learn from it and not let this one affect our next one.”

After leading 17-13 at halftime, the Chargers (8-6) suffered their third loss in four games. They were dominated in the second half by Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers, who scored the final 30 points of the game in what was seen as a matchup between potential playoff teams.

The NFL’s top-ranked defense gave up season highs of 40 points and 506 yards to Tampa Bay. Mayfield threw for 288 yards and four touchdowns, and the Buccaneers’ running game was just as powerful, rushing for 223 yards on 39 carries. Tampa Bay scored on eight of their first 10 possessions and never had to punt.

Justin Herbert in the 1st half

The Chargers had never been dominated like that all season.

“I feel like we didn’t get it done today on defense,” safety Derwin James said. “They punched us in the mouth, and we didn’t stop the run and the pass, or really anything. We didn’t stop anything today. … We just need to clean it up on our end as a secondary. I feel like this was one of our worst games as a secondary, completely.”

Los Angeles gave up over 500 total yards and 200 rushing yards in a game for only the seventh time in the franchise’s history. This was the third time in the last four seasons that the team allowed such a performance, including a game against Mayfield’s Cleveland Browns in 2021 — although the Chargers won that game 47-42.

“When a team rushes for 200 yards on you, that’s something that doesn’t sit right with me,” Chargers linebacker Khalil Mack said. “It’s just frustrating.”

This performance was a big surprise given how well the Chargers’ defense had been playing all season. They had held their first nine opponents to 20 points or fewer, but three of their last five opponents have scored at least 30 points.

“They’ve played almost perfectly all year, and it’s tough,” Herbert said of his defense.

Herbert’s offense struggled too, gaining only 64 yards after halftime and failing to score in the final 37 minutes. The running game struggled without injured J.K. Dobbins, and Herbert, who is also dealing with an injured ankle, found it difficult to pass effectively with no standout playmakers at the skill positions.

Herbert’s interception marked the end of his streak without one, adding to the team’s troubles.

Los Angeles was only down 23-17 in the third quarter when Herbert, under pressure, threw a pass from near the goal line. The ball was overthrown and intercepted by Tampa Bay’s Jamel Dean after receiver Quentin Johnston fell while trying to catch it.

That interception ended Herbert’s streak at 357 pass attempts without one, the fifth-longest streak in NFL history.

Kimani Vidal and J.J. Russell in the 1st half

“You play quarterback without fear, and I’m going to take my shots,” Herbert said. “I’m going to throw the ball downfield, and I’ve got to be smart about it and understand that maybe a throwaway is better in that situation.

You can’t take out the aggressive mentality of throwing the ball downfield, especially to one of your playmakers. But I’ve got to do a better job there.”

Herbert and his teammates all agreed that they need to move on from this game quickly, as the Denver Broncos (9-5) will be at SoFi Stadium on Thursday night for an important game for both teams’ playoff hopes.

Los Angeles won 23-17 at Denver in October, holding a 23-point lead in the fourth quarter before holding on with a toughness the Chargers couldn’t find against Tampa Bay.

“Next week is a must-win game, the most important game of our season,” James said. “I can’t wait to get ready and prepare for it. Just wasn’t our day today.”

Alpine Resumes Talks with Franco Colapinto About Potential F1 2026 Opportunity

Flavio Briatore has hinted that Alpine could make a new attempt to sign Franco Colapinto for the F1 2026 season, stressing that the Williams driver should be seriously considered for a race seat.

Colapinto impressed many after stepping in for Logan Sargeant at Williams in August, scoring points in two of his first four races in Azerbaijan and the United States.

The Argentine’s quick impact caught the attention of some major F1 teams, including Red Bull, where Colapinto was briefly considered as a possible replacement for Sergio Perez.

While Alpine confirmed their driver lineup for the 2025 season with Pierre Gasly and Jack Doohan at the Dutch Grand Prix, there were rumors that the team might still be interested in Colapinto.

A photo taken at the Qatar Grand Prix showed Colapinto and his manager, Maria Catarineu of Bullet Sports Management, talking to Briatore in the paddock.

Despite these rumors, Alpine’s focus shifted after Doohan made his F1 debut at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and it’s believed that Alpine’s interest in Colapinto for next season has cooled following some costly on-track mistakes.

Franco Colapinto (F1)

Colapinto is expected to remain as Williams’ reserve driver for the start of the 2025 season, as the team has already committed to Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon as their race drivers.

However, Briatore has raised the possibility that Alpine could renew their interest in Colapinto for the 2026 season, saying that the team must consider every chance to sign the talented young driver.

He told German publication Auto Motor und Sport: “I’m interested in any driver who is fast. Colapinto surprised everyone, but we have contracts with Gasly, Doohan, and [Paul] Aron for next season. If there was an opportunity to get Colapinto for 2026, you have to think about it. Nevertheless, you always have to be careful when assessing drivers. In this sport, you quickly get hyped up after a good race. Then the price rises, and suddenly we’re talking about 20 or 30 million dollars.”

Briatore also discussed the growing pool of promising drivers in F1, saying, “Today, there are six to seven promising drivers in Formula 2 and Formula 3. We want to concentrate on the good ones in our academy and no longer run around with a watering can. It will probably come down to three drivers: Aron, [Gabriele] Mini, and [Victor] Martins.”

The F1 scene is going through a generational shift with veteran drivers like Valtteri Bottas and Kevin Magnussen leaving, and potentially Sergio Perez as well. In 2025, Doohan will be one of four rookies on the grid, along with Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes), Oliver Bearman (Haas), and Gabriel Bortoleto (Sauber/Audi F1).

Red Bull junior Isack Hadjar, who finished second in the F2 standings behind Bortoleto, could also earn a race seat for 2025 if Perez is replaced by Liam Lawson, leaving a spot open at Red Bull.

Briatore sees the difficulties faced by Sainz in securing a top seat for 2025 as part of this generational change. He credits former Alpine junior Oscar Piastri’s success at McLaren for making teams more willing to trust young drivers.

He explained: “It is now time for a generational change. Sainz is a very good driver, but when he was on the market, none of the top teams took him on. They prefer to go for young drivers.

Toto Wolff on Antonelli, Christian Horner on Lawson. Young drivers are hungrier than someone who has a wife and two children and €30-40million in the bank. Even Enzo Ferrari said that drivers slow down when they have children. I think the rise of Piastri has made people think.

Franco Colapinto in an interview (F1)

Bearman jumps into a Ferrari overnight [in Saudi Arabia] and drives a great race. The young drivers are much better trained and the competitive pressure is higher.”

Reflecting on his brief stint with Williams in Abu Dhabi, Colapinto said he thought he had done a “pretty good job” after being unexpectedly promoted to a race seat.

He told media, including PlanetF1.com: “It was very exciting. It was my dream come true. And since I started in Monza, I knew a lot of things had to happen and I had to learn a lot and I had to keep moving forward. And I think when you look at the bigger picture that doesn’t happen many times in F1. You are as good as your last race and I think that’s how Formula 1 works.

Looking at the bigger picture, I think I did a pretty good job. I tried to maximize the opportunity that Williams gave me. It was an incredible chance and I think something I respect a lot. James [Vowles, team principal] and Sven [Smeets, sporting director], everyone in the team, put the confidence and the trust to give me a seat and to give me that opportunity.

I think Vegas was quite tough. Being tough on me, I think, it was a pretty big mistake going for it in the last lap in quali, trying to put the car in Q3. That’s where I look back and I just think that some mistakes could have been avoided, but I think looking at the overall picture and the experience was my dream come true. Very excited to see where the future departs.”

Bruun Larsen scores a last-minute goal for Hoffenheim to prevent Dortmund from claiming victory

Jacob Bruun Larsen scored a late goal on his return to Borussia Dortmund, helping Hoffenheim earn a 1-1 draw in the Bundesliga on Sunday.

Gio Reyna’s first goal of the season appeared to give Dortmund the lead for a seventh league win, but Hoffenheim substitute Bruun Larsen scored in the first minute of stoppage time after Dortmund’s defense lost focus on a cross from Haris Tabaković.

Bruun Larsen, 26, who played for Dortmund from 2015 to 2020 with a five-month stint at Stuttgart, shot the ball inside the left post. He did not celebrate the goal, though his teammates did.

“If I’d played from the start, maybe it would have been two goals,” Bruun Larsen said, referring to starting on the bench.

Reyna had scored earlier in the second half, when he stopped an attempted clearance with his chest and fired the ball into the top right corner.

The 22-year-old American made his first start of the season on Wednesday in Dortmund’s 3-2 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League, and Dortmund coach Nuri Sahin clearly felt Reyna deserved another start four days later.

Karim Adeyemi reacts after receiving a yellow card

In the first half, Serhou Guirassy thought he had won a penalty after a slight touch from Brazilian defender Arthur Chaves. However, referee Harm Osmers changed his mind after reviewing the video replays. Guirassy was arguably lucky not to be booked for diving.

Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck played the full match despite appearing to suffer a serious injury in the game against Barcelona.

After this draw, Dortmund dropped to eighth place, having now dropped points in eight out of 14 league games.

In the early game, Stuttgart won 3-1 at Heidenheim to climb two places to sixth. After a slow start to both the league and the Champions League, Stuttgart has now won four consecutive matches across all competitions, scoring at least three goals in each.

Heidenheim, which had a strong season last year as a newly promoted team, is now struggling in the relegation zone after seven losses across all competitions. Eintracht Frankfurt played at Leipzig later on Sunday.

Fabian Zetterlund scored and added an assist for San Jose, while Alexander Wennberg and Mikael Granlund also found the back of the net. San Jose has lost four of its last five games. Vitek Vanecek stopped 36 shots in the loss.

Guenther opened the scoring at 7:27 when his shot from the slot deflected off Wennberg and past Vanecek, marking his team-leading 13th goal of the season. He has had points in five straight games (three goals, five assists).

Wennberg tied the game 1-1 at 14:58 of the first period, beating Vejmelka on the glove side for his eighth goal of the season. Barclay Goodrow, in his 600th career game, assisted on the goal.

San Jose Sharks (NHL)

San Jose took a 2-1 lead at 14:11 of the second period when Granlund scored off a rebound from Zetterlund’s shot, beating Vejmelka on the short side for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Utah tied it up 2-2 on a power play at 18:52 in the second when Schmaltz tipped a pass from Cooley past Vanecek for his fifth goal of the year.

Zetterlund gave San Jose a 3-2 lead at 5:00 of the third period when he one-timed a pass from Nikolai Kovalenko past Vejmelka for his 10th goal of the season. Kovalenko now has four assists in two games since being traded from the Colorado Avalanche on Monday.

Carcone tied the game 3-3 at 9:49 by tapping in a cross-ice pass from Kevin Stenlund for his third goal of the season.

Keller scored the winner with 43.8 seconds left on a power play, beating Vanecek with a shot from the point for his 10th goal of the season. Keller has three goals and three assists in his last five games.

This was the second of three meetings between the teams. San Jose and Utah will conclude their season series on January 10 in Salt Lake City.

David Pastrnak celebrated a milestone night as the Boston Bruins dominated the Vancouver Canucks in a big 6-1 victory

David Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha, both from the Czech Republic, each scored a goal and combined for seven points to help the Boston Bruins easily defeat the Vancouver Canucks 5-1 on Saturday night.

Pastrnak (one goal, three assists) reached 400 career assists, becoming the 11th player in Bruins history to do so. He helped set up Boston’s first three goals before scoring just 26 seconds into the third period.

Zacha (one goal, two assists) and Morgan Geekie (one goal, one assist) also had multiple points, while Brad Marchand and Marc McLaughlin added goals. The Bruins have won five of their last seven games, even after starting 0-2-0 on this five-game road trip.

The Bruins built 2-0 and 4-0 leads at the intermissions, with goaltender Jeremy Swayman stopping 19 shots. For Vancouver, which has only won one of its last four games (1-2-1), Max Sasson scored his first NHL goal, and Thatcher Demko made 23 saves in his second start since returning from a knee injury.

Boston came out strong in the first period, getting the game’s first power play and finishing with a 16-4 advantage in shots, including 11-1 to start. Marchand scored first at 5:12, finishing a great power-play setup with a pass from Elias Lindholm. Geekie made it 2-0 when Pastrnak set him up at 8:08.

Boston Bruins (NHL)

In the second period, Boston took a 3-0 lead just 1:12 in. Pastrnak won a faceoff and fed Zacha, who made a backhand-to-forehand move to score. Vancouver began to push back midway through the period, with Swayman making a great save on a Conor Garland one-timer.

Boston added to its lead at 11:49 when McLaughlin scored his first goal of the season, shooting a rebound through Demko’s five-hole. Swayman kept a shutout intact through two periods, making a big save on Kiefer Sherwood late in the second.

In the third period, it took just 26 seconds for the Bruins to score again, with Charlie McAvoy setting up Pastrnak for a wraparound goal. It would have been 6-0 if not for Demko stopping Cole Koepke’s breakaway.

Vancouver finally got on the board with 9:47 left in the game when Sasson scored, assisted by J.T. Miller, to break Swayman’s shutout.

Matt Duchene scored in overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory over their Central Division rival, the St. Louis Blues

Matt Duchene scored during an overtime rush to give the Dallas Stars a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night.

Jason Robertson had a goal and an assist for the Stars, and Jake Oettinger made 15 saves, starting his fifth consecutive game. Oettinger stretched his left pad to stop Pavel Buchnevich in overtime before Duchene scored the game-winning goal.

Jordan Kyrou scored for the Blues, who are 5-2-2 under new coach Jim Montgomery. Jordan Binnington made 35 saves, earning St. Louis a point.

The Blues applied pressure during their first power play and finally scored just as it expired. After Robert Thomas’ shot was blocked, he retrieved the puck and passed it to Kyrou in the low slot, where Kyrou scored at 9:08, giving St. Louis a 1-0 lead. This was Kyrou’s seventh goal in the last 11 games.

Minnesota Wild and Philadelphia Flyers

Dallas came out strong in the second period, outshooting the Blues 14-3. Binnington made early saves on Logan Stankoven and Esa Lindell. The Stars capitalized on a power play 2:39 into the period, when Jamie Benn passed the puck to Robertson in the high slot, and Robertson tied the game 1-1 with a one-timer.

Dallas quickly got another power play and put more pressure on St. Louis, but the Blues killed it off to keep the score tied. Later in the second, the Stars had another power play but Binnington stopped Stankoven’s one-time shot from the left circle.

Dallas had more puck possession in the third period. Robertson had a great chance early on but couldn’t get his backhand shot past Binnington at the right post. The Blues created some scoring chances, but Oettinger stopped Jake Neighbours on a breakaway.

Despite being outshot 34-17 in regulation, St. Louis managed to reach overtime.

Tom Wilson scored twice to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres

Dylan Strome scored the game-winning goal in the third period, helping the Washington Capitals defeat the Buffalo Sabres 4-2 on Saturday.

Tom Wilson scored twice, and John Carlson contributed three assists for the Capitals, who have won four consecutive games and are 8-0-1 in their last nine. Logan Thompson made 19 saves.

Jason Zucker and Jiri Kulich scored for the Sabres, while Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 27 saves. Buffalo has now lost nine games in a row (0-6-3).

Zucker gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead at 1:36 in the first period. The puck deflected off Zucker’s skate after Jordan Greenway tipped a shot by Ryan McLeod, and it slowly went under Thompson’s pad.

Wilson tied the game 1-1 on a power play at 17:09 of the first period. After a faceoff win, Washington passed the puck around, and Carlson sent a shot-pass from the left circle that Wilson redirected past Luukkonen.

Buffalo Sabres (NHL)

Wilson’s second power-play goal gave Washington a 2-1 lead at 5:11 of the second period. After Luukkonen saved Jakob Chychrun’s shot, Wilson quickly swept in the rebound.

The Sabres tied the game at 2-2 at 7:24 when Kulich deflected a shot by Bowen Byram from the blue line into the net.

Strome put the Capitals back in front 3-2 at 11:05 in the third period, redirecting Carlson’s pass in the slot past Luukkonen for his 10th goal of the season.

Chychrun sealed the win with an empty-net goal from his own zone, making it 4-2.

Brady Tkachuk scored in overtime to give the Ottawa Senators a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night

Brady Tkachuk scored the game-winning goal in overtime as the Ottawa Senators beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Saturday night, winning their third straight game, which is a season-high for them.

In the fourth consecutive overtime game between these teams in Ottawa, Tkachuk received a stretch pass from Jake Sanderson, made a move around defenseman Erik Karlsson, and then beat goaltender Tristan Jarry (who had 28 saves) for his team-leading 15th goal. With this win, the Senators improved to 3-2 in overtime, while Pittsburgh’s record dropped to 4-5.

Thomas Chabot scored a goal and added an assist, and Drake Batherson scored his 13th goal for Ottawa, which has now won 5 of its last 7 games.

After stopping 118 of 121 shots in his previous four wins, including a 32-save shutout against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday, Linus Ullmark was back in goal for Ottawa and made 25 saves, earning his fifth consecutive win.

Blake Lizotte and Kris Letang scored for Pittsburgh, while defenseman Marcus Pettersson was injured late in the first period after a check into the boards and did not return to the game.

Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL)

Ottawa took the lead early in the first period. After Claude Giroux’s rebound shot, he skated around Jarry’s net and passed to Chabot, who scored his second goal of the season at 7:34. Ullmark made key saves during a Pittsburgh scoring chance when he denied Michael Bunting on a breakaway and made a remarkable stick save on a rebound shot from Karlsson.

In the second period, after Blake Lizotte was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, Jarry made five big saves on the Ottawa power play to keep the Penguins within one. However, Ullmark responded with a crucial save on Sidney Crosby’s chip-in attempt at the far post in the final minute of the second period.

Lizotte redeemed himself early in the third period, scoring on a rebound from Matt Grzelcyk’s shot to tie the game at 1-1. Batherson put Ottawa back on top after a pass from Chabot deflected off his skate and into the net at 6:38. Letang tied the game once more for Pittsburgh with his seventh goal at the 12-minute mark, leading to overtime.

Jets move back into first place in the Central with 4-2 victory over Canadiens

Gabriel Vilardi and Kyle Connor each contributed a goal and an assist as the Winnipeg Jets beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 on Saturday night, moving back into first place in the Central Division.

Josh Morrissey had two assists, and Adam Lowry and Vladislav Namestnikov also scored for Winnipeg. Nino Niederreiter, Dylan DeMelo, and Alex Iafallo each added an assist. Connor Hellebuyck made 26 saves in the victory.

Lane Hutson and Josh Anderson scored for Montreal, with assists from Mike Matheson, Cole Caufield, Christian Dvorak, and Brenden Gallagher. Sam Montembeault stopped 23 shots for the Canadiens.

Hutson gave Montreal an early lead with his first NHL goal at 12:12 of the first period. After a faceoff, he received a pass, moved quickly, and fired a shot from the dot past Hellebuyck.

Vilardi tied the game on Winnipeg’s first power play at 5:26 of the first. Connor made a great pass across the crease to Vilardi, who scored while on one knee.

The Jets responded quickly as Niederreiter sent a backhand pass from behind the net to Lowry, who scored from close range to give Winnipeg a 2-1 lead just 2:06 later.

Montreal Canadiens and Anaheim Ducks

Winnipeg extended their lead to 3-1 at 6:26 of the second period on another power play. Connor fired a shot past Montembeault with just two seconds left in a 5-on-3.

Montreal had a strong chance to score on their own power play, but with 2:27 left in the second, Hellebuyck, sitting on the ice without his stick, stopped a shot from Patrik Laine by swatting the puck away with both hands.

The Canadiens fought back in the third period, cutting the lead to 3-2 with 12:00 left when Anderson scored off a long rebound after a Winnipeg turnover in their zone.

Montreal couldn’t find the tying goal, and Namestnikov sealed the win for Winnipeg with an empty-net goal from the blue line with seven seconds remaining.

Alex Killorn scores in overtime to give Ducks 4-3 victory over Blue Jackets

Alex Killorn sealed his two-goal night by scoring 1:43 into overtime, leading the Anaheim Ducks to a 4-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.

Killorn had already scored in the second period, and in overtime, he received a pass from Robby Fabri and beat goalie Jet Greaves on a partial breakaway to end the game.

Anaheim defenseman Jackson LaCombe recorded a goal and an assist, while Mason McTavish scored a goal to reach his 100th career point.

John Gibson made 39 saves for the Ducks, who ended a five-game losing streak, their longest of the season.

Earlier on Saturday, Anaheim traded veteran Cam Fowler and a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for a second-round pick and defenseman Jeremie Biakabutuka.

For the Blue Jackets, Kirill Marchenko and Cole Sillinger scored 34 seconds apart late in the first period. Jet Greaves made 23 saves. Columbus has lost six of their last seven games (1-4-2).

Columbus defenseman Zach Werenski assisted on Marchenko’s power-play goal, extending his home point streak to nine games. This ties him with Ryan Johansen (2014-15) for the fourth longest in franchise history, just one game short of Oliver Bjorkstrand (2021-22), Cam Atkinson (2016-17), and Andrew Cassels (2002-03).

Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL)

Dmitri Voronkov seemed to give Columbus a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal late in the second period, but the goal was ruled offside after Anaheim challenged it successfully, with Marchenko controlling the puck at the blue line.

Columbus took a 3-2 lead with 8:35 remaining in the third period after Damon Severson’s slap pass found James van Riemsdyk at the back post. However, the Ducks equalized with 2:46 left as LaCombe’s shot deflected past Greaves.

McTavish put the Ducks on the board with 3:27 remaining in the first period, crashing into Greaves after shooting the puck.

Anaheim’s lead lasted only 36 seconds, as Marchenko fired a shot from the slot to score on the power play. It was his 11th goal of the season and his first since Dec. 1.

Just 34 seconds later, Columbus took a 2-1 lead as Zach Aston-Reese’s pass found Sillinger in front for a quick goal. Killorn then tied the game at 13:56 of the second period after receiving a backdoor pass from LaCombe.
