Henderson’s 34th home run ignites the Baltimore Orioles to a 13-3 victory, pushing the Chicago White Sox to a 31-108

Gunnar Henderson matched a franchise record for shortstops with his 34th home run, and the Baltimore Orioles crushed the Chicago White Sox 13-3 on Monday, extending Chicago’s losing streak to 11 games.

Chicago fell to a 31-108 record and has now lost 20 straight games started by Chris Flexen (2-14), setting a major league record for the most consecutive losses by a pitcher, surpassing the previous mark held by Milwaukee’s Chris Capuano.

Cedric Mullins hit a home run and had three RBIs, while Austin Slater and Henderson each drove in three runs for Baltimore. The Orioles came back from a 2-0 deficit and began a six-game homestand, improving to 5-0 against Chicago this season.

Baltimore’s leadoff batter reached base in each of the first six innings, a first since July 4, 1997, when they lost 11-8 to Detroit in the second game of a doubleheader. The Orioles went 7 for 23 with runners in scoring position and closed in on the AL East-leading New York Yankees.

This was Baltimore’s most productive offensive day since they scored a season-high 17 runs on June 20 against the Yankees, and their 18 hits were their most since collecting 18 at Houston on June 21.

Corbin Burnes pitches in the 1st inning

“I think that’s the offense we believe we are, and it was fun to see it come out today,” Slater said.

After an 0-10 homestand, Chicago is now on its third-longest losing streak this season, following slides of 21 games from July 10 to August 5 and 14 games from May 22 to June 6. The White Sox need to go 12-11 to avoid tying the post-1900 loss record set by the 1962 New York Mets, who finished 40-120.

Chicago is on track to finish with a 36-126 record, which would be the second-most losses in history, behind the 1899 Cleveland Spiders’ 20-134 record. The White Sox have lost 15 of their last 16 games and 41 of their last 45.

Flexen (2-14) gave up three runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings and hasn’t won a game since May 8 at Tampa Bay, going 0-11 with a 5.73 ERA in 21 appearances (20 starts).

Capuano had a record of 0-13 with a 6.12 ERA for Milwaukee in 23 appearances (19 starts) from May 13, 2007, to June 3, 2010, missing the 2008 and 2009 seasons due to Tommy John surgery.

“Every time I take the ball, I expect myself to go out and be competitive, have strong outings,” Flexen said. “I don’t think a lot of them have been all that great, a couple of quality starts in there, but my performance has been very disappointing on my end.”

Henderson hit a home run into the right-center bleachers in the first inning, tying Cal Ripken Jr. (1991) and Miguel Tejada (2004) for the most home runs by a Baltimore shortstop.

Anthony Santander hits a single in the 3rd inning

Corbin Burnes (13-7) allowed two runs — one earned — and six hits in five innings. He had been winless in three games since his last win at Cleveland on August 4.

Cole Irvin gave up a run in three innings to earn his second big league save, and his first since July 19, 2019.

Chicago’s Andrew Benintendi hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, and Gavin Sheets followed with an RBI single.

Anthony Santander evened the score with an RBI single in the third inning, and Slater put the Orioles in front with a run-scoring double.

Henderson’s sacrifice fly and Adley Rutschman’s RBI single gave the Orioles a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning, and they scored six runs in the sixth inning. Mullins added a two-run homer off Touki Toussaint in the eighth inning.

“Hopefully this gives our hitters some confidence,” Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said.

“With a bunch of guys kind of grinding right now offensively, and they have been for a while, you start seeing your numbers improve a little bit on the board and get a couple hits and you come to the park a little bit differently the next day.”

Gavin Williams threw 7 effective innings, leading the Cleveland Guardians to a 4-2 victory over the struggling Kansas City Royals

Gavin Williams threw seven strong innings, and the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Monday.

Lane Thomas and Josh Naylor each hit two-run home runs for Cleveland, which leads the AL Central and has won four out of its last five games.

Williams (3-7) gave up one run and one hit in a promising September outing, bouncing back after going 1-4 with a 6.56 ERA in five starts last month.

“Filling up the zone,” Williams said. “Talking with (catcher) Bo (Naylor) and having a better plan. Just seeing the way they took different pitches.”

The right-hander walked two batters while throwing 46 pitches in the first two innings but then retired his last 16 batters.

“The first couple of innings he was fighting himself,” Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. “Made an adjustment. To go seven was much needed, for him, for us, and everything.”

Lane Thomas celebrates after hitting a home run in the 5th inning

The Guardians started the day with a 3 1/2-game lead over Minnesota and Kansas City in the division.

The Royals played without manager Matt Quatraro, who was absent due to a personal matter. Bench coach Paul Hoover managed the team in Quatraro’s place.

Kansas City ended up with two hits in its sixth straight loss, a season high.

“The ball’s not bouncing our way,” Royals infielder Michael Massey said. “We’ve gone through streaks where the ball hits on the right side of the chalk line and streaks where it hits the wrong side. We’re just on the wrong side right now.”

Thomas’ ninth home run of the season gave Cleveland a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning. It was Thomas’ first homer since being traded from Washington on July 29.

“All you want to do is contribute,” Thomas said. “It was nice to give Gavin a little support there.”

Larnach smashes a three-run homer, leading the Minnesota Twins to a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays

Trevor Larnach and Brooks Lee both hit home runs to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.

The Twins won their second consecutive game for the first time since their three-game winning streak from August 15-17. They stayed 3.5 games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland and moved ahead of Kansas City for the AL’s second wild-card spot.

Five Minnesota relievers combined to pitch 5 1/3 innings, allowing only one run. Jorge Alcala (4-3) got four outs for the win, and Jhoan Duran closed the game with his 21st save in 23 attempts.

“We needed a lot of guys to come in and pitch well. It was a very good, communal team win,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “There were a lot of calls to the bullpen. I called down there early and said it’s basically gonna be a bullpen kind of battle between both teams.

Some of them were fresh, some of them were far from fresh, but we got the win.”

Brandon Lowe celebrates after scoring

With a Labor Day crowd of 11,636 in attendance, Tampa Bay lost for the fourth time in five games.

Dylan Carlson drove in two runs for the Rays, and Jonny DeLuca hit his fifth homer of the season. Zack Littell (5-9) gave up four runs and seven hits in four innings.

Carlson’s two-run single gave the Rays a 2-1 lead in the first inning. But Larnach hit a three-run home run in the second inning for his 15th homer of the season.

“We’re not sitting here where we’re at without Trevor Larnach,” Baldelli said. “He’s hitting in a prominent spot in the lineup and he’s there for a reason.”

Lee added another home run in the eighth inning off Garrett Cleavinger, sending a drive to center for his third of the year.

Littell walked four batters and struck out two in his first game back from the 15-day injured list due to right shoulder fatigue.

“Physically I felt good, just obviously not very sharp,” Littell said. “Command wasn’t great. Missed a lot over the plate. I mean, four walks just doesn’t play.”

Lamar Jackson said he isn’t viewing Thursday night’s game as a chance for revenge

The last time Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson played, he left the field in Baltimore while the Chiefs celebrated another trip to the Super Bowl.

That trip was the Chiefs’ fourth in the last five years, making them the top team in the AFC right now. Jackson and the Ravens will need to beat the Chiefs if they want to get Jackson to his first Super Bowl.

However, Jackson said on Sunday that he isn’t adding extra significance to Thursday night’s game in Kansas City.

“Any game I play in, I feel like it’s a revenge game,” Jackson said, via the team’s website. “I’m not just going to look at this game like a revenge game.

Lamar Jackson gets off a pass during the AFC Championship NFL

Anybody we play, no matter if we’ve beaten them or lost to them in previous years, I just want to win.”

Even though the playoff loss to the Chiefs adds some extra story to Thursday’s game, it is still just the first of 17 regular season games that the Ravens need to get through to have a chance to change the outcome of last season.

Jackson’s response shows this perspective, although it’s hard to believe that beating Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in their stadium wouldn’t feel a bit sweeter than other regular season wins.

Coco Gauff’s US Open title defense came to an end with a loss to Emma Navarro, as she struggled with 19 double-faults

Here’s what you need to know about defending champion Coco Gauff’s 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 loss to Emma Navarro in the U.S. Open fourth round: Gauff had more double-faults, 19, than winners, 14.

This loss adds to a string of early exits recently, including a third-round finish at the Paris Olympics and a 1-2 record in hard-court events leading up to New York.

Despite her struggles, Gauff, the No. 3 seed, tried to stay positive. She noted that many players would be thrilled with her summer performance, even if it didn’t match her past success.

“So many people want to be in the fourth round. So many people want to make the Olympics. So many people want to be flag bearer. It’s perspective,” Gauff said.

The 20-year-old from Florida managed to come back in the match briefly by winning four games in a row to take the second set. Navarro, the 13th seed, said she had a tough moment but managed to regain focus.

Coco Gauff reacts after losing the match

After her previous matches in New York, Gauff practiced her serve, but it didn’t improve much. She matched her career high for double-faults, also hitting 19 in a loss at the 2020 French Open. Gauff had three double-faults in four different games, with eleven coming in the final set.

Gauff blamed her issues on problems with her serve mechanics and mental challenges. She explained, “I go down on my left side a lot on my serve, and it’s something I’m aware of, but it’s tough in the moment to, I guess, try not to do it.”

Gauff mentioned that her issues might be more about emotions and mental strength. She said, “It’s sometimes more of an emotional, mental thing, because if I go out on the practice court right now, I would make, like, 30 serves in a row.

I’ve done it before. I think it’s also just kind of a mental hurdle that I have to get over when it comes. … But I definitely want to look at other things, because I don’t want to lose matches like this anymore.”

Gauff ended up with 60 unforced errors, including 29 on her forehand side.

Coco Gauff and Emma Navarro in the U.S. Open tennis championship

Navarro, who also beat Gauff in the fourth round at Wimbledon in July, played more consistently on Sunday, though she still made 35 unforced errors. Navarro said, “It was a little bit of a battle of will there for a bit. But proud of just my effort today. I was able to stick in there through some tough moments.”

This match follows a third-round loss by defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic on Friday, meaning no player will win back-to-back titles in New York for a while. The last woman to win two in a row was Serena Williams from 2012-14, and the last man was Roger Federer with five from 2004-08.

On Sunday night, Frances Tiafoe defeated No. 28 seed Alexei Popyrin, who had upset Djokovic, with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3. Tiafoe, the No. 20 seed, made it to his third straight U.S. Open quarterfinal and will face No. 9 Grigor Dimitrov, who won against Andrey Rublev 6-3, 7-6 (3), 1-6, 3-6, 6-3. Serena Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, was present and gave a thumbs-up at the end of the match.

Emma Navarro plays a return shot

Also advancing on Sunday was No. 12 Taylor Fritz, who defeated three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud with scores of 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. Fritz will face 2020 U.S. Open runner-up Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals, after Zverev won against Brandon Nakashima 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

Fritz said, “I’m at the point now where I’m still happy to make quarterfinals, but I wouldn’t be happy with it ending here. I definitely am at the point where I really want more than that.” He has not yet reached a Grand Slam semifinal.

Emma Navarro, who beat Gauff at Wimbledon, reached her first major quarterfinal with the win. She will play her second quarterfinal on Tuesday in New York against No. 26 Paula Badosa, who won 6-1, 6-2 against Wang Yafan.

The other women’s match on Tuesday will be between No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka — last year’s runner-up to Gauff, who won 6-2, 6-4 against Elise Mertens — and No. 7 Zheng Qinwen, who defeated No. 24 Donna Vekic 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-2 in the latest finish to a women’s match in U.S. Open history, ending at 2:15 a.m. Monday.

Coco Gauff reacts after scoring a point

Navarro will get another chance to play at Arthur Ashe Stadium, where she had never played before Sunday. She felt surprisingly comfortable on the big stage.

Navarro said, “I’ve been out on big courts before, where I just felt totally overwhelmed and almost like it’s an out-of-body experience.

But I didn’t feel like that today. I felt comfortable from the time I stepped out onto the court, which I was a little bit surprised about. I kind of had prepared myself for the worst, just in terms of feeling overwhelmed and nervous.”

Caitlin Clark scores 28 points as the Indiana Fever defeat the Dallas Wings 100-93, despite Arike Ogunbowale tying a record with 9 three-pointers

Caitlin Clark scored 28 points and had 12 assists as the Indiana Fever beat the Dallas Wings 100-93 on Sunday. The Fever managed to win despite Arike Ogunbowale hitting nine three-pointers, which tied a record.

Kelsey Mitchell added 36 points, including a three-pointer that put the Fever ahead by four with 1:58 left in the game. Both teams had won their previous three games.

Ogunbowale made 9 of 16 three-point attempts, surpassing her own record of seven but falling short of a record 10th three-pointer. She scored 34 points and also matched her career high with eight rebounds.

She tied the league record for most three-pointers in a game, which is also held by Mitchell (2019) and Jewell Loyd of Seattle (2023).

Mitchell praised Ogunbowale, saying, “I salute people like Arike because off the court, we’re really great friends. We tend to work out and train together in the offseason. I wasn’t expecting any other way coming from a person like that.”

Satou Sabally celebrates after scoring

Clark and Mitchell each made five three-pointers, helping the Fever shoot 50% from beyond the arc and 53% overall.

Clark said, “When you have two guards that are both making plays, it puts the other team in a tough position of what to take away, who to put on who.

We’re definitely shooting it well. We’re playing off each other well. We’re looking for each other, and we’re getting downhill, too. I think it’s been a good balance of everything.”

Clark had just scored a career-high 31 points in a previous game against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky. She also set a WNBA record with 19 assists in her first regular-season game in Texas, before the Olympic break, in a game the Fever lost 101-93.

San Francisco 49ers player Ricky Pearsall has been released from the hospital following a shooting during an attempted robbery

A juvenile suspect is in custody after allegedly shooting San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in the chest on Saturday afternoon during an attempted robbery in central San Francisco, officials said.

Pearsall, 23, was released from San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center on Sunday, according to a statement from the team. He had been listed in fair condition.

Pearsall was walking alone with shopping bags to his car just after 3:30 p.m. on Saturday when a suspect tried to rob him with a gun on Geary Boulevard in the Union Square area, officials said.

“There was a struggle between Mr. Pearsall and the suspect, and gunfire from the suspect’s gun hit both Mr. Pearsall and the suspect,” San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said during a news briefing.

Officers nearby responded quickly, gave emergency medical aid, and arrested the suspect.

The suspect, a 17-year-old male from Tracy, California, about 60 miles east of San Francisco, was also taken to San Francisco General. His condition was not immediately revealed.

Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots. A gun believed to belong to the suspect was recovered, and investigators think he acted alone, Scott said.

Ricky Pearsall in the practice session

A video taken by a witness showed Pearsall, shirtless with a large chest wound, being helped into an ambulance, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

“This kind of violence is simply unacceptable in our city, and we will do everything we can to work with District Attorney Brooke Jenkins to ensure that justice is served,” Scott said.

Jenkins told reporters at the briefing that her office expects to decide on charges by Tuesday or Wednesday and will initially file any charges in the juvenile court system.

Scott mentioned that there was no sign that Pearsall was targeted because he is a player for the city’s football team.

“He and his family, along with the entire San Francisco 49ers organization, would like to thank the San Francisco Police Department, emergency medical services, doctors and staff at San Francisco General Hospital,” said the team statement on Sunday.

“He’s good,” 49ers teammate Deebo Samuel posted on X. “Thank god!!!!” Mayor London Breed expressed confidence in the district attorney’s actions to handle the case. “This is how we hold people accountable in San Francisco.

Robberies and any violence like this will not be tolerated in our city,” Breed said during the briefing, also thanking the hospital staff, police, and first responders including San Francisco Fire Department personnel.

Ricky Pearsall in the training camp

“This was a terrible and rare incident in Union Square and our thoughts are with Ricky Pearsall and his family. He has a bright future and I look forward to seeing him recover and get back on the field,” Breed said.

Pearsall was drafted in the first round in April by the 49ers with the 31st overall pick but has faced injuries since joining the team.

He missed some time during training camp due to hamstring and shoulder problems before returning to practice this past week with a noncontact blue jersey while his shoulder heals.

Pearsall started his college career at Arizona State and then transferred to Florida for his last two seasons. He had 65 catches for 965 yards and four touchdowns last season for the Gators and finished his college career with 159 catches for 2,420 yards and 14 touchdowns.

The 49ers had hoped Pearsall could contribute as a rookie, serving as a backup to starters Brandon Aiyuk and Samuel.

New Green Bay kicker Brayden Narveson had family connections to Wisconsin even before he joined the Green Bay Packers

Brayden Narveson might not have been the happiest person in his family when the Green Bay Packers picked him off waivers to be their kicker.

The move was a homecoming for his wife, Shelby Narveson. She grew up in Prescott, Wisconsin, with a family full of Packers fans. Prescott is just east of the Minnesota border and about 270 miles west of Green Bay.

“She’s like, ‘I’m going to be the coolest person in my hometown,’“ Narveson said.

Narveson made 6 of 7 field-goal attempts with a longest kick of 59 yards during a preseason tryout with the Tennessee Titans, who decided to stick with Nick Folk as their kicker this season.

The Packers decided Narveson was a better choice than Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph, who were competing for the position during training camp.

Narveson appreciated the Titans for giving him a chance in the preseason. Even though he was preparing to spend the season on Tennessee’s practice squad, he said Titans officials told him there was a chance he might be picked up by another team.

He ended up with the Packers, which thrilled his wife. The Narvesons got married this summer in Mexico.

“When I called and told her I got claimed by the Packers, she was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’“ Narveson said. “She hung the phone up and called her parents immediately.

Tennessee Titans players in the preseason game

So, she was probably more excited than I was but, obviously, very thankful for me, as well.” Narveson will make his NFL regular-season debut on Friday when the Packers start their season against the Philadelphia Eagles in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Even though he hasn’t tried a field goal in a regular NFL game yet, Narveson has made a good first impression on his new team. Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he feels confident about Narveson after seeing him in just two practices.

LaFleur said, “I just like his approach, his mentality. I can’t wait to see what happens in the game.”

Green Bay is the latest team for the well-traveled Narveson, who attended four different schools during his six-year college career. He played two seasons at Iowa State, briefly transferred to San Diego, spent three seasons at Western Kentucky, and finished at N.C. State last year.

Narveson said, “People can look at me and say that, ‘Oh, what is he doing? He’s going to four schools, this, that, and the other.’ But I think it prepared me really, really well.

Brayden Narveson kicks the ball in the 2nd half of the game

It was like an NFL journey, you know? You go in, you compete. You go in and compete. Every time I was at a new school, I had to win a whole new audience over. And I had to go compete against new guys, right?

So it just put me in a whole new frame of mind that every single day matters and every single time you step up on the field when you’re between those white lines, you’ve got to be focused and you’ve got to win the job.”

Narveson said that playing at N.C. State last year helped him get ready for the NFL because he had to take over for Christopher Dunn, who had won the Lou Groza Award as the top college kicker the previous year.

He responded by making 18 of 23 field-goal attempts last year and setting a school record with a 57-yarder against Duke.

Now, he’s facing even more pressure as he starts his NFL career with a team aiming for the Super Bowl. The Packers had a very stable kicking situation when Mason Crosby held the job from 2007-22 and became the franchise’s career-leading scorer.

Manaea and Lindor guide the New York Mets to a 2-0 victory while the Chicago White Sox set a franchise record with their 107th loss

Sean Manaea pitched for seven innings, allowing just two hits, and Francisco Lindor hit his 29th home run to help the New York Mets win 2-0 against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. This loss was the 107th for the White Sox, setting a new franchise record for the most losses in a season.

The White Sox (31-107) broke their previous record for losses, which was set by the 1970 team. They also had the first 0-10 homestand in their history and became the first team since the 1965 Mets to have three separate 10-game losing streaks in one season.

Lindor gave the Mets a 1-0 lead with a home run to start the fourth inning off Garrett Crochet. In the ninth inning, Starling Marte hit an RBI double off the center-field wall against Justin Anderson.

This win was the Mets’ fourth straight and ninth in their last 13 games, finishing a 7-3 road trip. They are now just one game behind Atlanta for the final NL wild card spot after the Braves lost 3-2 to Philadelphia in 11 innings.

Garrett Crochet pitches in the 1st inning

Manager Carlos Mendoza said, “We knew coming in here, especially after playing the Padres and the Diamondbacks, that we needed to keep the intensity, we needed to stay locked in, match their energy.”

He added, “I’m proud of the guys that we were able to do it one day at a time. And finally getting that last one 2-0 was important for us.”

Manaea (11-5) struck out five, walked two, and hit a batter with a pitch. He has won his last four outings and New York has won 12 of his last 15 starts.

Manaea retired his first 11 batters before walking Lenyn Sosa, who was then picked off at first base to end the fourth inning.

The White Sox didn’t get a hit until Miguel Vargas had a single to left field with two outs in the fifth inning. Chicago had a chance to score in the seventh inning but did not succeed.

Bogaerts and Merrill lead the San Diego Padres to a narrow 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays

Xander Bogaerts hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, and the San Diego Padres won 4-3 against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, despite giving up a three-run lead.

“We don’t like to give up leads,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said. “It’s not very common for us. (But when) we do get in a position where we need to fight back, we do.”

Jackson Merrill hit a two-run homer for the Padres, who are closely competing with Arizona for the first NL wild card spot. Merrill now has 79 RBIs, tying Benito Santiago’s rookie record for the team set in 1987.

Merrill also made a great diving catch in center field on Ben Rortvedt’s leadoff liner in the third inning.

“It makes you say, ‘Wow,’” Shildt said. “It’s clearly a highlight-type play. And of course the swing was big, too.”

Jake Cronenworth drew the Padres’ 10th walk leading off the ninth inning against Manuel Rodríguez (3-4) and advanced to third on Manny Machado’s single. Bogaerts then drove in the go-ahead run with a hit to deep center field.

Tanner Scott pitches in the 8th inning

Tampa Bay issued its most walks since August 29, 2019, against Houston.

“The walks set the tone,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “You’re dealing with some veteran hitters to take the walks, but between Machado and Bogaerts, they just have a good idea of what they’re doing.”

Tanner Scott (9-5) got out of a two-on, one-out situation in the eighth inning, and Robert Suarez did the same in the ninth to earn his 21st save in 23 chances.

Tampa Bay had only two baserunners through five innings against Dylan Cease before loading the bases with no outs in the sixth on two walks and a hit.

Jason Adam, who was acquired from Tampa Bay in July, then hit Junior Caminero with a pitch to bring in a run. Another run scored on Josh Lowe’s double-play grounder, and the Rays tied the game at 3 on a wild pitch by Adam.
