Jannik Sinner never gives his US Open opponents a chance for an upset, unlike what happened in matches against Djokovic and Alcaraz

On Saturday at the U.S. Open, Jannik Sinner made sure his third-round opponent, Chris O’Connell, never had a chance to think about pulling off a big upset like those against Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.

Sinner commented, “It shows that this sport is unpredictable. If you drop even a little in your level—whether mentally, tennis-wise, or physically—it can greatly impact the result. The opponents who lost played incredible tennis. And that happens.”

But Sinner, ranked No. 1, is now seen as the top contender for the men’s title at Flushing Meadows. He won the first five games and 21 of the first 29 points, clearly showing how the match would go. Sinner finished with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over O’Connell in less than two hours.

O’Connell said, “I felt like he was on from the start. I felt a bit lost, to be honest. Every shot, I felt like I had to do something with it because he was just on top of me. He was suffocating me.”

Playing less than 15 hours after Djokovic lost to Alexei Popyrin, and two days after Alcaraz’s loss to Botic van de Zandschulp, Sinner dominated in every aspect.

With Serena Williams watching from a suite, Sinner hit 15 aces, never faced a break point, won five of O’Connell’s 12 service games, and had more than twice as many winners, 46, as unforced errors, 22.

Novak Djokovic reacts after winning the game

O’Connell said, “The best tennis player I’ve ever played against, for sure.” The only past U.S. Open men’s champion still in the tournament is 2021 winner Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev, after beating No. 31 Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, said, “I definitely didn’t expect this in the fourth round with Novak and Carlos out. It’s fun, but it’s a new tournament now. I need to play my best to try to win it again.”

Next, Medvedev will face Nuno Borges, who came back to win after being a point away from elimination at 6-3 in a fourth-set tiebreaker, eventually beating Jakub Mensik 6-7 (5), 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-0.

Top-ranked Iga Swiatek, who won the U.S. Open in 2022 and has five Grand Slam titles, defeated No. 25 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4, 6-2 to make it to the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the fourth year in a row.

On Saturday, Jasmine Paolini joined Coco Gauff as the only woman to reach at least the fourth round in every major tournament in 2024. Paolini reached the fourth round at the U.S. Open for the first time with a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 30 seed Yulia Putintseva.

Paolini, who was the runner-up at the French Open in June and Wimbledon in July, will next play against 2023 French Open finalist Karolina Muchova. Also moving on are No. 6 Jessica Pegula, No. 16 Liudmila Samsonova, No. 18 Diana Shnaider, and 2018 Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki.

Carlos Alcaraz plays a forehand return in the game

Since losing the first set he played in New York against Mackie McDonald, which was also the first set Sinner had played since news of a doping case involving two positive tests for trace amounts of a banned steroid, the 23-year-old Italian has been flawless. He has lost only 18 games in nine sets.

Sinner, aiming for his second Grand Slam title of the year after winning his first at the Australian Open in January, will face No. 14 Tommy Paul of the United States in the fourth round on Monday. Paul won against Canadian qualifier Gabriel Diallo 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (3).

Sinner commented, “He’s a great mover. He has improved a lot recently. It’s going to be a tough challenge. He plays some great tennis, especially here in America.”

Sinner might have been cautious heading into Saturday’s match, especially given that it is only the third time in the Open era (the others being 1973 and 2000) that two of the top three seeded men have been eliminated before the fourth round.

So Sinner woke up as the top pick to win the U.S. Open, a position that had been held by No. 3 Alcaraz, who won the French Open and Wimbledon this year, before the tournament started.

No. 2 Djokovic, the defending champion with a record 24 major titles, became the favorite when Alcaraz was eliminated on Thursday. However, Djokovic lost his chance when he was also knocked out on Friday.

Jannik Sinner plays a forehand return

Ranked 87th, O’Connell hoped for another surprise win, even though he had never beaten a top 10 player or gone beyond the third round at a Grand Slam.

O’Connell saw what van de Zandschulp and Popyrin achieved and believed he might do something similar against Sinner.

“I mean, yeah, I’ve got to believe,” O’Connell said, “but I just felt that he was really on fire.”

It’s tough to follow up a career-best win with another, and van de Zandschulp didn’t perform well on Saturday, losing to No. 25 Jack Draper 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

Draper, a 22-year-old left-hander from Britain, has never been past the fourth round in a major, and neither has his next opponent, Tomas Machac, who won 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 against David Goffin.

“After the match (against Alcaraz), it was a little bit crazy,” van de Zandschulp said. “You try to think about the next match but you get reminded a lot of the match the day before. So of course it was tough to play today after the last two days.”

Raphinha scored a hat trick as Barcelona defeated Valladolid 7-0, making it four wins out of four under Flick

Brazil forward Raphinha scored a hat trick and assisted another goal as Barcelona defeated Valladolid 7-0, staying perfect with four wins out of four games under new coach Hansi Flick on Saturday.

The top team in the Spanish league easily beat newly promoted Valladolid at home, with Robert Lewandowski, Dani Olmo, Jules Koundé, and Ferran Torres also scoring.

Lamine Yamal, who played a key role in Spain’s European Championship win, set up two goals and was too much for Valladolid to handle from Lionel Messi’s old spot on the right side.

Raphinha, who had already been impressive this season with a couple of assists, scored his first career hat trick in the big win over Valladolid. This came after reports suggested the club was interested in signing Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, another standout from Spain.

Dani Olmo and Raphinha celebrates after a goal

If Williams had joined, Raphinha might have lost his spot in the team.

“I have been working hard since I came back from the summer holidays. I knew that this season would be very important,” the former Leeds player said.

“The game today showed that we don’t need new players to come in. We are in good shape and working hard in practice and games. And this shows where we are right now.”

The score was 3-0 by halftime, and the final result could have been even worse for Valladolid. Olmo, making his first start for Barcelona, hit the woodwork twice, and Lewandowski also struck the post.

When Barcelona fired Xavi Hernández and brought in Flick, president Joan Laporta said his team needed a change.

Oregon State and Washington State kick off a Pac-12 season like no other

Oregon State and Washington State kicked off the 2024 season as the only remaining teams in the Pac-12.

This season marks a new era in college football following the recent changes that left the Pac-12 with just these two teams.

The biggest difference was seen by viewers at home, as both teams’ season openers were shown nationally on the CW network instead of the Pac-12 networks.

“It’s just business as usual,” said Oregon State senior safety Jaden Robinson. “We respect everyone but fear no one. We’re here to do our job. I miss the Pac-12 though.”

Washington State won big against Portland State, 70-30, and Oregon State defeated Idaho State, 38-15.

Jake Dickert walks in the field

Cougars coach Jake Dickert mentioned, “This is our year in the spotlight. People want to see what happens to us and the Pac-12. Our focus is on our preparation and what we can control.”

The Pac-12 logo remains on the field and uniforms because of a settlement that lets the Cougars and Beavers keep using the conference’s branding.

Rivalry games will continue as usual. Oregon State will face Oregon on September 14, and Washington State will play Washington on the same day. Later, the Beavers and Cougars will play each other during Thanksgiving, when rivalry games are typically held.

Kalen DeBoer wasn’t the only new Alabama player to stand out in the season-opening blowout

Kalen DeBoer guided his team through the pre-game walk of champions, past Nick Saban’s statue, and onto Nick Saban Field.

The pre-game hype video featured Saban’s famous words from 2010, celebrating his first national title with Alabama: “I just want everybody here to know: This is not the end, this is the beginning.”

For DeBoer, it truly was the start.

The 49-year-old made his debut with Alabama in Saturday night’s 63-0 victory over Western Kentucky. He took over from a seven-time national champion coach whose influence is still strong on campus and across college football.

“It was a lot of fun,” DeBoer said. “The walk of champions was special for many of our players. It’s always going to be like that. You can feel the excitement. It was a lot of fun, especially for the new guys.”

Ryan Williams celebrates his touchdown

DeBoer wasn’t the only newcomer who made an impact for Alabama against a clearly overmatched opponent, though the players gave him the game ball.

Freshman Ryan Williams, one of DeBoer’s top recruits, demonstrated his talent by catching touchdown passes of 84 and 55 yards from Jalen Milroe in the first half.

“I’m going to be honest, it was just a matter of the ball in the air, it’s coming to me, so I’m going to do exactly what I practiced and make a play,” Williams said.

When asked about the open field in front of him, he said, “Just run fast and put some points on the board for my guys.”

These were his only catches, but they showcased the 17-year-old’s potential after he moved up a year to join Alabama early.

Pato O’Ward criticizes IndyCar leaders for not securing a race in Mexico before NASCAR did

The line for Pato O’Ward at every IndyCar autograph session stretches around corners, blocks other drivers’ access, and puts his rivals to shame.

When his Arrow McLaren Racing team tries to have meetings at the track, O’Ward’s fans gather outside the team transporter and get so loud that teammate Alexander Rossi says the meetings have to stop.

So when NASCAR announced this week that it will have a race in Mexico City in 2025, IndyCar drivers were shocked that another American series beat them to a market eager to see their most popular driver.

“I think that’s a massive miss,” said six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon. “I don’t know how that happens.”

O’Ward, who is from Monterrey and has built a big following in Mexico in his five years with IndyCar, is also puzzled. Despite his popularity, NASCAR — with Mexican driver Daniel Suarez — will be racing next season at Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

O’Ward is the reserve F1 driver for McLaren and needs security to move around the track property. It’s not that he’s in danger; it’s just that his 2022 visit to the stadium bowl grandstands with a GoPro camera showed how quickly he can be surrounded by fans.

Pato O’Ward talks to the team members

But he wants to race in front of them, and with NASCAR’s new long-term deal in Mexico City, O’Ward isn’t sure if IndyCar will have a chance.

“They beat us to the cake,” O’Ward said. “I strongly believe that we’re not only late, but I strongly believe that there isn’t more room in Mexico City.

Like, not only did they beat us there, but now that is not an option for IndyCar. You need to understand that these people save up their money to go to these events.”

His competitors sympathize with O’Ward, who has even paid for ticket promotions to help his fans attend IndyCar races.

IndyCar points leader Alex Palou was visibly surprised that IndyCar didn’t secure the race that went to NASCAR, which will hold an event outside the U.S. for the first time in modern history next June.

“It’s like, everybody is overtaking us, like left, right, left, right,” Palou said. “One-hundred percent, we should have been (in Mexico City). It doesn’t make much sense for me. But for Pato, he’s been growing, so I think we’re like five years too late, and now NASCAR overtakes us.”

O’Ward believes IndyCar’s only chance to race in Mexico now is to find a new location. The series raced in Mexico from 2001 to 2006 in Monterrey at Parque Fundidora, a track that would need major upgrades to host major races again. The 2007 CART season finale was held in Mexico City.

Alex Palou preps for the race

Salvador de Alba, the current NASCAR Mexico champion who also races in Indy NXT, disagrees that Mexico City can’t handle three international races. He also admits there are no other suitable tracks in the country for an IndyCar race at the moment.

“At the moment I think none of them. It has to be rebuilt, a racetrack,” de Alba said. “But we have a pretty good racetrack in Monterrey, which is Pato’s hometown. Guadalajara is also a big city, which is my hometown, but we don’t have a big racetrack. But I’ll do whatever it takes to have IndyCar in Mexico.”

Michel Jourdain Jr., a former NASCAR and IndyCar driver who promotes races in Mexico, said the Monterrey track would need so many upgrades that it might be cheaper to build a new one from scratch.

Penske Entertainment CEO Mark Miles mentioned that IndyCar has yearly talks about returning to Mexico. Before Roger Penske bought the series in 2020, IndyCar was only offered a lease deal for the Mexico City track because the promoters didn’t think the series was a big enough draw.

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without Hollywood Brown when they begin the season against the Baltimore Ravens

The Chiefs will have new players JuJu Smith-Schuster and Samaje Perine available, but wide receiver Marquise Brown will not be playing when they face the Ravens on Thursday night in their season opener, a rematch of the AFC title game.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid mentioned on Friday that Smith-Schuster and Perine should be able to learn enough of the playbook in time to contribute against Baltimore.

Smith-Schuster was released by the Patriots last month and joined the Chiefs on Monday, while Perine was released by the Broncos on Tuesday and arrived in Kansas City two days later.

“I’ve just got to see with Perine with where he’s at in picking everything up,” Reid said. “I’m not going to put him in a bad position obviously, but I think he’s going to be fine. He’s been here cranking things up, so we’ll see how it goes.”

Brown, who was one of the Chiefs’ major free-agent signings, dislocated the sternoclavicular joint in his shoulder after catching a pass in their preseason opener against Jacksonville.

Andy Reid and John Harbaugh talk on the ground

He managed to have the shoulder set without surgery, which helped speed up his recovery time from 4 to 6 weeks, giving him a chance to be ready for Week 1.

Even though Brown was on the practice field this week, he didn’t participate in any full activities, and Reid decided to let him recover more.

Since Chiefs general manager Brett Veach chose not to put Brown on short-term injured reserve when the roster was adjusted, they still expect him back in the next few weeks.

“He’s at the point where he can laugh without pain,” Veach said this week, sharing a positive update on Brown’s recovery.

Smith-Schuster adds valuable depth to the team’s receiving corps.

Donovan hits a three-run homer, and the St. Louis Cardinals fend off the New York Yankees for a 6-5 victory

Brendan Donovan hit a three-run homer, and Kyle Gibson pitched seven strong innings as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the New York Yankees 6-5 on Saturday, marking their first regular-season win at Yankee Stadium.

This was the Cardinals’ first victory in the Bronx since Tim McCarver hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning of Game 5 of the 1964 World Series, and Bob Gibson pitched a complete game in a 5-2 win. The Cardinals had been 1-7 at Yankee Stadium in the regular season before this game.

St. Louis took the lead with four runs in the third inning against rookie Will Warren (0-3). Nolan Arenado hit a tying RBI single before Donovan hit his 11th homer. This was his first three-run homer since July 23, 2023.

“Any day you hit a home run, I consider that a good day and to have a couple of people on base and to give us a little bit of breathing room, I think is good,” Donovan said after tying his career high in homers.

Will Waren pitches in the 1st inning

“Someone said that’s the first time we’ve won here in 60 years, which is pretty special for this organization. First time here, it’s a pretty cool place.”

Iván Herrera hit an RBI double in the sixth inning and later scored on a throwing error by Yankees catcher Austin Wells following a wild pitch by Mark Leiter Jr. Herrera reached base three times and hit a single in the third inning when Paul Goldschmidt was thrown out at the plate.

Gibson (8-6) allowed one run and five hits. After having his worst outing of the season on Monday against San Diego, he earned his first win since July 7 at Washington.

“Today was just about trying to clear my mind a little bit, not look at ERA, not look at last couple of outings and try to be focused on what I’m trying to do today,” Gibson said.

Max Scherzer identifies the issue that has kept him off the mound and expresses his desire to pitch again this year

Max Scherzer is confident he has figured out the cause of a nerve issue that has kept him from pitching for a month. The three-time Cy Young Award winner is now ready to start rehab and hopes to return to the mound for the Texas Rangers.

Scherzer said on Saturday that changing his pitching mechanics has reduced the irritation of the triceps nerve, which was only affecting him while he was pitching. He completed a full bullpen session on Friday without experiencing any pain.

“I feel like I can overcome this, because there’s nothing wrong. … I don’t have an injury here. This was just nerve irritation,” Scherzer said. “I feel like I potentially have solved this, and now I can actually build back up.”

Even though the reigning World Series champion Texas Rangers are focusing on 2025—having been 10 games back in the AL West as of Saturday night—40-year-old Scherzer said he definitely wants to pitch again this season and plans to continue pitching beyond this year.

“I’ve got to go out there and prove it,” he said. “And if I do, then, yeah, I definitely want to pitch next year. I said that coming in.

I came into this year thinking I was going to pitch next year, so nothing’s changed. Obviously, if I fail at this, you know, I’ve got to rethink, but I don’t think I’ll have to rethink. I think I’ve got to go out there and execute this.”

Max Scherzer pitches in the 1st innin

Scherzer is in the final year of his contract. The Rangers acquired him from the New York Mets in a trade last summer, with Scherzer opting in for this final year at $43.3 million, with New York paying $30.83 million.

Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Scherzer might be ready as soon as Monday to throw to hitters or participate in a rehab game.

“He’s got a different look about him because he thinks he’s got this cleared up with the arm issue due to the mechanical adjustment he made, so that’s what you like to see,” Bochy said.

Scherzer (2-4, 3.89 ERA), who still leads the majors in strikeouts, last pitched on July 30, when he left after 68 pitches and four innings in St. Louis.

That was just his eighth start since he began the season on June 23 after having offseason back surgery and then dealing with a nerve issue in his arm.

He went on the injured list after his last start due to shoulder fatigue. An MRI showed some inflammation, and Scherzer continued to have setbacks when he tried to get back on the mound.

Max Scherzer leaves the ground

“I passed every strength test, yet I still couldn’t throw a ball,” he said. “It was the nerve issue again in the triceps, so that kind of set off another chain of events, go see more doctors, had nerve tests.”

Scherzer said there was no nerve damage, and it was found that something must be pinching the nerve when he was trying to pitch. This led to a minor mechanical adjustment, similar to changes he has made during his 17-year major league career.

“It’s usually because of a performance thing,” he said. “I’ve never had my mechanics really cause an arm injury or cause a nerve irritation, and so that’s what was so perplexing to me.”

In his last home start on July 25, just two days before his 40th birthday, Scherzer struck out nine in six innings against the Chicago White Sox. This performance moved him past fellow three-time Cy Young winner Justin Verlander for 10th place on the all-time strikeout list.

Scherzer now has 3,405 career strikeouts, three more than Verlander, who leads in wins (260) and games started (561), while Scherzer has 216 wins and 456 starts.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw on the 15-day injured list because of a bone spur in his toe

The Los Angeles Dodgers have put veteran left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw on the 15-day injured list.

Kershaw, who left Friday’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks after just two innings, was found to have a bone spur in his left big toe.

“There’s so much swelling, he can barely move around,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before Saturday’s game.

Kershaw allowed three runs in the first inning, and with his early exit, the Dodgers used every reliever on their team except for Evan Phillips, who had pitched the previous two days.

The Dodgers brought up right-handed pitcher Ben Casparius from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take Kershaw’s place.

“We need some coverage for tonight,” Roberts said, noting they won’t know exactly how long Kershaw will be out. “I don’t think the 15 days will cut into the buildup” of his stamina, Roberts said.

Clayton Kershaw pitches in the 2nd inning

Kershaw, who did not pitch until July 25 due to offseason shoulder surgery, has a 2-2 record with a 4.50 ERA in seven starts this season. In his 17 seasons with the Dodgers, the 10-time All-Star has a 212-94 record and a 2.50 ERA.

Right-hander Joe Kelly was also put on the injured list by the Dodgers on Saturday. Kelly is dealing with right shoulder inflammation.

Kelly pitched 1 2/3 innings on Friday and gave up two earned runs on three hits. The 13-year veteran has a 1-1 record with a 5.20 ERA in 31 games this year.

To replace Kelly, the Dodgers selected right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell’s contract for his second stint with the team this season. Honeywell had been designated for assignment on August 18.

Left-handed pitcher Justin Wrobleski is with the team, and with roster expansion on Sunday, he will be activated to start that game against Arizona.
