Jets cornerback Brandin Echols and the team are facing a lawsuit due to a car accident that harmed another driver and resulted in Echols missing the first game of the 2023 season.
According to Anthony Attrino of NJ.com, Stephen Gilberg, the other driver involved, alleges in the lawsuit that Echols crashed into his car while driving too fast.
This collision caused Gilberg’s car to flip over and land upside down in a marshy area, resulting in serious injuries that still require medical treatment.
The lawsuit claims that Echols had a history of reckless driving, and it accuses the Jets of negligence for hiring him without properly checking his driving and criminal records.
“New York Jets LLC did not take reasonable precautions when hiring Echols as one of its players because they failed to conduct adequate checks on his driving and criminal history,” the lawsuit states.
Following the accident, Echols was arrested but later entered a pretrial diversion program. He received a suspension for the first game of the previous season but returned to play, recording 11 tackles and scoring an interception touchdown in 14 games.
