Manchester City could face more disappointment. Following their painful exit from the Champions League, City are now up against the possibility of losing their FA Cup title in the semifinals on Saturday.

This threat comes from a player they let go in the summer, who has since emerged as a standout in English soccer this season.

When Manchester City allowed Cole Palmer to join Chelsea for a hefty fee of at least £40 million, manager Pep Guardiola acknowledged Palmer’s talent and quality. However, the decision raised eyebrows, considering Palmer’s limited playing time at City and his young age.

Despite the doubts, Palmer has proven to be an exceptional signing for Chelsea, showcasing his abilities and making a significant impact on the pitch.

After netting a hat trick against Manchester United and scoring four goals against Everton recently, Palmer shares the top spot as the Premier League’s leading scorer with 20 goals.

This achievement puts him on par with City’s Erling Haaland, once hailed as a remarkable goal-scoring talent.

What’s intriguing is that Palmer’s goal tally is up there despite not featuring in Chelsea’s initial three games and scoring his first league goal in October.

He’s known for his trademark celebration, crossing his arms in a “shiver” pose, earning him the nickname “Cold Palmer” for his coolness under pressure.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino praised Palmer’s adaptability and goal-scoring prowess, emphasizing his seamless transition into the team. Palmer typically plays as an attacking midfielder or a winger on the right, cutting inside with his left foot.

He’s skillful and agile, often executing “nutmegs” and displaying ruthless finishing abilities.

He’s netted some incredible goals in the Premier League this season, like his solo effort against Luton where he skillfully dribbled past the goalkeeper and calmly finished after sidestepping a defender. His goal against Everton was equally impressive.

Plus, he’s been flawless from the penalty spot, converting all nine attempts.

His standout performances haven’t gone unnoticed by England coach Gareth Southgate, who’s given him opportunities in recent matches against Malta and North Macedonia. While he’s likely to be part of the European Championship squad, he may not start games.

But will he come back to haunt City, his former club where he spent 15 years? He left seeking regular playtime, understanding he couldn’t compete with City’s array of attacking midfield talent.

Already, he’s scored against City in a thrilling league match in November. Plus, he’s familiar with scoring at Wembley Stadium, having done so for City in the Community Shield against Arsenal earlier this season.

Guardiola understands that City’s success in both the Premier League and FA Cup depends on keeping Palmer quiet.
