Roma’s owners, Dan and Ryan Friedkin, declared on Thursday that they’ve extended Daniele De Rossi’s contract as coach of the team, just three months after he took over the role.

“After meeting with Daniele De Rossi, we’re pleased to announce that he’ll remain as AS Roma’s head coach beyond this season,” the Friedkins stated. “His leadership has made a positive impact on the entire club during his short time as coach.”

When De Rossi, a former Roma captain, replaced the dismissed José Mourinho in January, Roma was in ninth place and was at risk of not making it to Europe. Since De Rossi took over, Roma has climbed to fifth place and is in contention for a spot in the Champions League.

Under De Rossi’s guidance, Roma has won 11 out of 16 games in all competitions, drawing three and losing two. Their only Serie A defeat under De Rossi was against league leader Inter Milan. They also lost 1-0 to Brighton in the Europa League round of 16, but they had already secured advancement with a 4-0 win in the first leg.

The announcement from the owners comes ahead of Roma’s Europa League quarterfinal second leg against AC Milan, with Roma holding a 1-0 lead from the first leg.

“We’re excited to continue our long-term project with Daniele,” the Friedkins added. “More details will follow in the coming days.”
