Virginia Tech players celebrates after a touchdown

Kyron Drones led Virginia Tech to a 37-17 victory over Old Dominion on Saturday at S.B. Ballard Stadium by both running and passing effectively.

Drones threw for 176 yards, completing 15 of 26 passes, and also ran for 117 yards on 12 carries. Running back Bhayshul Tuten contributed with 115 yards and two touchdowns from 21 carries. Jaylin Lane caught seven passes for 106 yards and a touchdown, while kicker John Love added field goals of 21, 32, and 41 yards.

“We responded in all three phases at some point during this game,” Hokies coach Brent Pry said. “And it was necessary.”

Old Dominion, now 0-3, saw freshman quarterback Quinn Henicle score a touchdown on the ground but only completed 4 of 10 passes for 23 yards. Tariq Sims added 26 rushing yards and a touchdown.

“We (have) to get better,” Old Dominion coach Ricky Rahne said. “That’s the bottom line. We have to be able to sustain drives at a higher level.

There was a moment in the second quarter when I thought we were playing pretty well up front, but we weren’t able to keep that going into the third and early fourth.”

Virginia Tech started strong with touchdowns on their first two possessions. Drones threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Lane on the opening drive and then scored on a one-yard run on their next possession.

Despite this early success, the Hokies struggled to maintain their momentum as the game progressed.
