Oklahoma coach Brent Venables has chosen true freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. as the new starting quarterback for the Sooners, replacing Jackson Arnold for the game on Saturday against Auburn.
Venables announced this decision during his weekly radio show on Monday night.
Arnold struggled in the first half of a 25-15 loss to Tennessee on Saturday, turning the ball over three times.
The former five-star recruit completed 7 of 16 passes for 54 yards, threw an interception, and had five carries for minus-21 yards, along with two lost fumbles. His mistakes played a major role in Tennessee leading 19-3 at halftime.
Hawkins brought new energy to the Sooners in the second half, which led Venables to open up the quarterback competition.
He completed 11 of 18 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown, while also running for 22 yards as Oklahoma outscored the Volunteers 12-6 in the second half.
