Dave McCarty, a former member of the Boston Red Sox championship team in 2004, and who played with seven MLB teams during his 11-year career, has passed away at the age of 54.

The Red Sox confirmed McCarty’s passing, stating that he suffered a cardiac event in Oakland, California, on Friday.

Earlier this month, McCarty was in Boston and participated in the 20-year celebration of the ’04 championship team at Fenway Park, marking the Red Sox’s first World Series win since 1918.

McCarty spent his final three MLB seasons with the Red Sox from 2003-05. During his time in Boston, he played in 118 games, batting .286 with five home runs.

He contributed to Boston’s championship-winning season in 2004, making appearances in various positions, including first base, outfield, and even pitching in three games.

Hailing from Houston, Texas, McCarty was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the first round of the 1991 draft from Stanford University. Throughout his career, he also played for the San Francisco Giants, Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, Tampa Bay Rays, and Oakland A’s.

In a total of 630 big league games, McCarty compiled a batting average of .242 with 362 hits, 36 home runs, and 175 RBIs.

Following his retirement from playing, McCarty served as an analyst for the New England Sports Network from the summer of 2005 until the end of the 2008 MLB season.
