Detroit Pistons Rookie Ausar Thompson Out for Season with Blood Clot: Team Faces Further Setbacks

Amidst the ongoing struggles of the Detroit Pistons this season, there’s been another setback. The team recently revealed that rookie wing Ausar Thompson will be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to treatment for a blood clot.

The concerning news emerged following Thompson’s premature exit from the game against the Dallas Mavericks on March 9, where he logged only 11 minutes before leaving due to what was initially labeled as an “illness.” Subsequently, an “asthma” classification was appended to Thompson’s name on the Pistons’ injury report before their subsequent game.

While the rookie has been cleared for conditioning, it’s anticipated that he will commence non-contact basketball activities once the regular season concludes, as per the team’s announcement.

Reflecting on the situation, Pistons coach Monty Williams expressed relief that medical professionals identified the issue. He remarked, “I’m just glad the doctors caught it. From all of the information that I’ve gotten, they’re handling it… It’s a medical situation, but I’m glad they caught it.”

Thompson, drafted as the fifth pick in last year’s NBA Draft, had been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal season for the Pistons, who currently hold a record of 12-56, poised to potentially clinch the franchise’s worst-ever record.

The team’s woes were compounded with the additional news that starter Isaiah Stewart would also miss the remainder of the season due to a hamstring strain incurred during Monday’s game against the Boston Celtics.

Known for his defensive prowess, Thompson was a cornerstone for the Pistons, often tasked with guarding the opponent’s most challenging players alongside Stewart. He earned accolades for his potential as a long-term wing defender.

Despite his defensive strengths, Thompson’s offensive game, particularly his 3-point shooting, remains a work in progress. However, he showcased proficiency as a finisher around the rim and provided electrifying moments in transition.

Prior to his medical setback, Thompson was on track to be the sole Detroit player to feature in all 82 games of the season. Across 63 games, he maintained averages of 25 minutes, 8.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 1.1 steals, and 0.9 blocks, with a field goal percentage of 48.3%.
