Dominic Thiem, the former U.S. Open titleholder, is planning to end his tennis career by the end of this year. His decision comes after facing challenges in regaining his peak performance following a wrist injury.
In a heartfelt video shared on Instagram, Thiem expressed his mixed emotions, describing it as a sad yet significant announcement. The Austrian athlete clinched his sole Grand Slam victory at Flushing Meadows in 2020, overcoming a two-set deficit in the final against Alexander Zverev.
Despite reaching the finals of three other major tournaments—the French Open in 2018 and 2019, and the Australian Open in 2020—Thiem’s career trajectory faced a setback after sustaining a wrist injury in June 2021. This injury kept him out of action for nine months and has continued to impact his game since then.
Thiem cited his ongoing wrist issues and his personal feelings as key factors influencing his decision to retire. Reflecting on his career, he expressed that this decision had been on his mind for a considerable time.
Throughout his career, Thiem has amassed a total of 17 titles, leaving behind a legacy tennis.
