Quarterback Drake Maye is expected to be picked early in the upcoming draft after his Pro Day performance on Thursday.
Maye threw 70 passes during his workout at the University of North Carolina in front of NFL scouts. While he started a bit slow, he improved as the session went on and showed off his strong throwing arm.
“I felt like I threw well,” Maye said. “I was throwing the ball nicely, although I wish I had a few throws back. When you have 70 throws, you’re bound to miss a few. My goal was perfection, and although I didn’t achieve that, I believe I did well. The guys did a great job, and I tried to showcase different skills, like throwing on the move and with accuracy.”
Maye didn’t participate in drills at the scouting combine, so he wanted to make a statement with his Pro Day performance.
“I wanted to show I can throw deep with the best of them,” Maye said. “I completed every deep ball, which was my goal. I missed some intermediate throws, but that’s part of it. The main focus was on throwing deep.”
Regarding his future team, Maye said he’s not fixated on any specific one. “I’m just excited to see where I end up, and I trust that everything will work out,” he said.
In 2022, Maye threw for 4,321 yards with 38 touchdowns and seven interceptions. In 2023, he recorded 3,608 passing yards with 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
