Barcelona head coach Xavi has alleviated concerns over midfielder Ilkay Gundogan’s health following their recent 3-1 La Liga victory against Alaves on Saturday, February 3.

The Catalan side faced Alaves without eight key first-team players, adding to their worries when Gundogan was substituted in the 59th minute. However, Xavi clarified the situation.

Addressing the media post-match, the Spanish manager reassured that Gundogan had only sustained a minor knock and there was no cause for alarm.

“There are no injuries today. Gundogan had a knock on his back, but it was nothing,” Xavi stated (via SportsMole). “I replaced Pedri because he was tired. I’ve brought in Fermin [Lopez] to provide a little more legs to the team.”

Barcelona’s goal-scoring spree began with Robert Lewandowski in the 22nd minute, followed by Gundogan doubling the lead early in the second half. Although Samu Omorodion reduced the deficit for Alaves, Victor Roque restored Barcelona’s two-goal advantage in the 63rd minute.

Despite being reduced to 10 men for the final 17 minutes due to Roque’s dismissal, Barcelona managed to preserve their lead. With this victory, they climbed to the third position in the league standings with 50 points from 23 matches, trailing leaders Real Madrid by seven points, albeit having played one game more.
