Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez is contemplating utilizing Andreas Christensen more frequently as a defensive midfielder, according to reports. The decision follows Christensen’s commendable performance in an unconventional number six role during the recent match against Alaves on Saturday, February 3.
Xavi’s surprising move to deploy Christensen in the midfield has garnered positive feedback from the coaching staff, indicating a potential shift in his role within the team. With Oriol Romeu’s diminished role and Ilkay Gundogan’s success in a number eight position, Christensen could see increased playing time as a defensive midfielder.
Following the victory against Alaves, Xavi praised Christensen for his adaptability and technical proficiency in the new position. The Barcelona manager expressed his satisfaction with Christensen’s performance, highlighting his suitability for the pivot role. Xavi stated:
“I’m happy with Christensen. He will give us discipline there, but because of his technical ability, he can play in the pivot position… I liked Christensen in the pivot position. With the ball, he can be very smooth, and he told me that he is comfortable, and this is an option that we are considering.”
Andreas Christensen arrived at Barcelona on a free transfer in the summer of 2022 following the expiration of his contract at Chelsea. With 58 appearances for the Spanish club thus far, his future at Barcelona beyond the current season has been subject to speculation.
