Canada Crushes Qatar 6-0 as Jonathan David Scores Historic World Cup Hat Trick

Canada took a major step toward advancing to the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 6-0 victory over Qatar in Vancouver. The win marked Canada’s first-ever World Cup victory and left the team in a strong position to progress from Group B.

Forward Jonathan David was the star of the match, scoring a hat trick and leading an impressive Canadian attacking display. Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute after converting a rebound from a saved David volley. David then doubled Canada’s advantage in the 29th minute with a well-taken volley before adding his second goal during first-half stoppage time following a scramble in front of the net.

Qatar’s task became significantly more difficult after defender Homan Ahmed was shown a red card in the 33rd minute. Following a video review, what was initially ruled a penalty was changed to a free kick for Canada, and Ahmed’s yellow card was upgraded to a red. Reduced to ten players, Qatar struggled to contain Canada’s relentless pressure.

Canada Overwhelms Nine-Man Qatar as David Completes Historic Hat Trick

The match became even more chaotic early in the second half when Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo received a red card for a challenge on Canadian midfielder Ismaël Koné. The tackle resulted in a serious lower-leg injury to Koné, who had to be carried off the field. Canadian players visibly expressed concern for their teammate, while Madibo appeared distraught as he left the pitch.

With Qatar reduced to nine players, Canada continued to dominate. Substitute Nathan Saliba scored from a free kick in the 64th minute to make it 4-0. A Qatar own goal by Mohamed Manai increased the lead to 5-0 in the 75th minute, before David completed his hat trick to cap a memorable night for the hosts.

The six-goal performance significantly boosted Canada’s all-time World Cup scoring record. Before the tournament, the nation had scored only a handful of goals across its previous World Cup appearances. The victory was witnessed by more than 52,000 fans at BC Place, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Canada also welcomed back captain Alphonso Davies and defender Moïse Bombito to the matchday squad after injury absences, although neither player appeared. Meanwhile, Qatar remained without a World Cup victory, continuing a disappointing run that began during its winless campaign as host nation in 2022.
