Eagles Rumors: Ex-Cowboy Will Grier Lands Contract to Join Jalen Hurts, Kenny Pickett

The Philadelphia Eagles are undergoing a significant overhaul in their quarterback lineup as they prepare for the 2024 season, making notable moves behind their starter, Jalen Hurts.

According to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Eagles have inked a one-year deal with Will Grier, adding him to their roster.

This acquisition follows the Eagles’ recent trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where they secured Kenny Pickett along with a 2024 fourth-round draft pick. In exchange, the Eagles traded away a 2024 third-round draft pick and two seventh-rounders in 2025.

Grier’s return to action comes after a hiatus since his rookie season with the Carolina Panthers back in 2019, during which he struggled with a record of 0-2 in two starts, failing to score any touchdowns while throwing four interceptions.

After his release from the Panthers towards the end of the preseason in 2021, Grier found himself picked up by the Dallas Cowboys via waivers. However, he remained as the third-string quarterback behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.

Grier’s opportunity for on-field action with the Cowboys arose when Prescott sustained a fractured thumb, sidelining him for five games during the 2022 season. Despite being elevated to the active roster from the practice squad, Grier remained the backup to Rush and never saw playing time.

Following his departure from Dallas in August 2023, where he showcased his skills in a preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Grier’s journey continued. He briefly joined the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad before being signed by the New England Patriots to their 53-man roster, albeit briefly, as he later returned to their practice squad.

In a twist of fate, Grier finally made his way onto the 53-man roster of the Los Angeles Chargers on December 19, stepping in after Justin Herbert suffered a season-ending fractured finger.

As for the Eagles’ previous quarterback lineup, alongside Hurts, Marcus Mariota and Tanner McKee held prominent positions last season. However, Mariota’s departure as a free agent to the Washington Commanders on March 14 leaves room for new contenders.

McKee, a sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, remains on the Eagles’ roster and is expected to vie with Grier for the No. 3 or emergency quarterback role throughout the offseason.
