Jonathan Haggerty, the reigning ONE bantamweight Muay Thai and kickboxing world champion, remains vigilant about the top contender in the kickboxing division, even as he prepares for his upcoming Muay Thai bout on the global stage of ONE Championship.
Set to defend his ‘Art of Eight Limbs’ crown against Felipe Lobo in the main event of ONE Fight Night 19 on February 16, airing live in American prime-time, Haggerty understands the importance of balancing both disciplines.
Amid his training camp in Koh Samui, Thailand, he shared his thoughts on Hiroki Akimoto, the current No. 1-ranked bantamweight kickboxing contender, with the South China Morning Post:
“I’d say out loud like he does deserve to be the number one. He’s the number one contender. He deserves to have the next shot at the kickboxing world title, and yeah, just know that when we are coming together, I’ll be well prepared.”
With six impressive victories against formidable opponents like Capitan Petchyindee, Qiu Jianliang, Zhang Chenglong, Kenny Tse, and Josh Tonna, Haggerty has showcased his versatility and skill set, solidifying his status as one of the division’s most thrilling stars.
Despite a setback in losing his gold, the 31-year-old is eager for another opportunity to compete for the coveted strap, setting the stage for a potentially electrifying showdown against Jonathan Haggerty in 2024.
