Former Manchester City defender Micah Richards made a surprising revelation back in December 2023, suggesting that Sergio Agüero had deceived everyone by pretending he couldn’t speak English to avoid interviews during his time in the Premier League.

Sergio Agüero was undoubtedly a standout performer during his tenure in the Premier League, consistently delivering remarkable performances for Manchester City.

Despite his prominence on the pitch, Aguero showed little interest in engaging with the media. According to Micah Richards, the Argentine forward would often evade interviews by claiming he couldn’t speak English, despite being fluent in the language.

“This is the thing, Gary – Sergio Agüero was lying,” Richards revealed on the Rest is Football podcast (via The Sun). “When they asked him to do interviews, he would say, ‘I don’t speak English’. But he spoke brilliant English.”

Richards elaborated, stating that Aguero was well-versed in English slang and terminology. Despite his proficiency in the language, Aguero maintained the facade to avoid media obligations, leaving English players like Richards, James Milner, and Joleon Lescott to handle the interviews.

Sergio Agüero joined Manchester City from Atlético Madrid in 2011, enjoying a highly successful decade at the club before departing for Barcelona in 2021. Unfortunately, his time at Barcelona was brief, as a heart condition forced him to retire from professional football at the age of 33, just five months after joining the Spanish giants.
