The Chargers have kicked off their offseason program, and the initial phase is largely led by their new Executive Director of Player Performance, Ben Herbert.
Jim Harbaugh brought Herbert from Michigan, where he served as Harbaugh’s strength coach, and gave him an important role because he believed Herbert was crucial to the Chargers’ plans.
Harbaugh expressed, “Ben Herbert plays a significant role in this Phase One. He helps us gauge where each player stands and what areas they need to improve on. He’s always ready to train and brings a blend of modern science with old-school discipline that I’ve never seen before. He’s the best I’ve ever worked with.”
Herbert focuses on making players physically stronger to endure the demands of football, emphasizing strengthening vulnerable areas.
Harbaugh added, “We’ve been working together for about six years. Our philosophy revolves around doing whatever it takes for the players’ benefit, both on and off the field. We aim to improve their football skills and well-being.”
Veteran tight end Hayden Hurst praised Herbert’s approach, noting his meticulous baseline testing on the first day. He appreciates Herbert’s dedication to preventing injuries and believes a healthier team will perform better under Harbaugh and Herbert’s guidance.
