The Kansas City Chiefs have struck deals for one year with quarterback Carson Wentz and running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, according to two individuals familiar with the negotiations who spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday. This move gives them a backup for Patrick Mahomes and adds depth to their running back lineup.

Wentz, who was selected as the No. 2 pick in the 2016 draft, will be joining his fifth team in five years. He began his career with the Philadelphia Eagles and spent the previous season with the Rams.

Throughout his career, Wentz has faced injuries and inconsistency, but he brings experience as a starting quarterback.

He led the Colts to a 9-8 record last season and threw for over 3,500 yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Meanwhile, Edwards-Helaire, who was drafted by the Chiefs in the first round in 2020, has struggled to meet expectations due to injuries. However, he has shown his versatility as a running back and receiver in Andy Reid’s offense.

Despite not having his fifth-year option picked up, Edwards-Helaire’s familiarity with the Chiefs’ system and his potential to excel make his return to Kansas City a sensible move.
