Joey Ortiz hit a single that brought in a run in the 11th inning and ended with a home run and four RBIs, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-6 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday night.
Owen Miller, who replaced former Yankee Gary Sánchez as a pinch runner on second base to start the 11th inning, moved to third base on a fly ball hit by Brice Turang to right field.
Ortiz then singled between the legs of third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera, bringing in the winning run.
“I was just happy to be able to contribute to the team’s victory,” Ortiz said. “That’s what counts.”
Ortiz entered the game with three hits in his last 24 at-bats, including 0 for 13 in the last 12.
“Just hit the ball hard, make good contact,” he said. “Put the ball in play and make things happen.”
Jose Trevino of New York, who was on second base to start the 10th inning, scored on a double hit by pinch-hitter Giancarlo Stanton to the left-center wall. Milwaukee equalized in the bottom of the inning when Willy Adames hit a single to center, bringing in William Contreras and tying the score at 6-all.
Jared Koenig (2-0) got the win with two innings of relief. Michael Tonkin (1-3), who was claimed off waivers from the New York Mets on Thursday, took the loss.
