Jordan Spieth misses cut, wayward drive off patron costs $20 at Byron Nelson

Jordan Spieth, a seasoned golfer with a storied career, experienced another setback at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, missing his fourth cut of the season. The event held particular significance for Spieth, as it marked the location of his PGA Tour debut as a 16-year-old back in 2010.

During the second round of the tournament, Spieth found himself on the brink of making the weekend cut, standing one shot off the cut-line at 5-under par as he approached the challenging par-4 16th hole.

Despite a wayward tee shot that veered well right of the fairway, Spieth received an unexpected stroke of luck when his ball rebounded off a patron’s elbow, redirecting it back into the middle of the fairway. This fortunate bounce presented him with a favorable position for his next shot.

However, Spieth failed to capitalize on the opportunity, pulling his approach to the left side of the green and ultimately three-putting from there, slipping to 4-under par and falling two shots behind the cut line.

In addition to the disappointment of his performance, Spieth also lost a playful wager, handing $20 to the fan whose elbow inadvertently redirected his ball. To further acknowledge the unusual turn of events, Spieth gifted the fan a signed golf ball, perhaps as a token of appreciation for the unintentional assist.

Despite efforts to regain momentum in the closing holes, Spieth concluded the day with a 1-under 70, ultimately missing the cut. Looking ahead, Spieth aims to rebound at the upcoming Wells Fargo Championship before setting his sights on the PGA Championship, where he hopes to secure the career Grand Slam, all while avoiding any further mishaps involving fans on the course.
