Leon Edwards’ coach says he’s “99.9 percent” certain Belal Muhammad is next

Leon Edwards, the welterweight champion, is anticipated to defend his title against Belal Muhammad in Manchester, according to his head coach, Dave Lovell. Edwards last fought in UFC 296 in December, triumphing over Colby Covington by decision. Despite attempts to secure fights, including offers against Islam Makhachev, Shavkat Rakhmonov, and Khamzat Chimaev for UFC 300, none materialized.

Lovell expressed confidence in Edwards fighting in Manchester in July, citing the large Muslim community there. While the opponent isn’t confirmed, Lovell stated it’s highly probable it will be Belal Muhammad, though it’s not officially confirmed.

Belal Muhammad has been the top contender since defeating Gilbert Burns in May 2023. While he waited for a title shot, it now seems he’ll get his chance on the Manchester card, as indicated by Lovell’s remarks.

The potential rematch between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad holds significance as they previously fought in March 2021. Their first encounter ended in a No Contest due to an accidental eye poke by Edwards.

Since then, Edwards has achieved a 4-0 record, including wins over Nate Diaz and Kamaru Usman to claim and defend the belt. Muhammad, on the other hand, boasts a 5-0 record since their initial bout, defeating notable opponents such as Gilbert Burns, Sean Brady, and Stephen Thompson.

The upcoming match promises to be a compelling showdown, with both fighters showcasing impressive records and skills. As they prepare to face off once again, the anticipation among fans is palpable, especially with the potential for redemption or consolidation of their previous encounter’s outcome.
