Lewis Hamilton recently reflected on the common trait shared between himself, Fernando Alonso, and Max Verstappen, emphasizing their collective competitiveness. Hamilton’s rivalry with Alonso dates back to their time as teammates at McLaren in 2007, marked by initial tensions that led to Alonso’s departure from the team.

While Hamilton and Alonso battled for supremacy on the track, Hamilton’s duel with Max Verstappen in the 2021 championship season added another chapter to his storied career. Despite ultimately losing the title to Verstappen, their season-long contest is hailed as one of F1’s greatest rivalries.

In an interview with Formula 1, Hamilton highlighted the intense drive shared by all F1 drivers, attributing it to their diverse backgrounds and aspirations. He remarked:

“I think that not only we, but all drivers in Formula 1 are extremely driven. Just for different reasons. Different upbringings, different opportunities, different challenges. But I see many similarities with all these drivers and also with younger drivers from Formula 2 and Formula 3, for example.”

Acknowledging the competitive spirit uniting him, Verstappen, and Alonso, Hamilton affirmed:

“I think Max and Fernando have one thing in common with me: we are all extremely competitive. We go to great lengths to achieve what we want. I can’t say much about what they are like as a person. I only know them from the Formula 1 world, it is not the case that I visit them, for example.”

When asked about advice for Verstappen following his third consecutive title win, Hamilton commended the Dutchman’s performance and simply encouraged him to stay the course:

“I would say, keep doing what you’re doing. He’s doing great.”

As Hamilton gears up for the 2024 F1 season, he remains optimistic about regaining competitiveness and aims to secure victories, if not the championship. The past two seasons have presented challenges for Hamilton, marking a notable dry spell in his illustrious career, but he remains steadfast in his pursuit of success on the track.
