Franco Negri, making his first start since June of 2023 following an Achilles tear, was unfortunate to divert the ball into his own net just two minutes into the game.
However, the Herons swiftly responded as Lionel Messi equalized 11 minutes later before goalkeeper Elliot Panicco’s error gifted Miami a corner. From the resulting set-piece, Messi’s delivery found Sergio Busquets’ head, giving Miami the lead at halftime.
The match underscored the importance of containing Messi and Luis Suarez for any team facing Inter Miami. Messi extended his influence with a second goal from the penalty spot late in the game after Leo Alfonso was fouled in the box. However, the injury to Diego Gomez in the first half will concern Tata Martino, as it further depletes their midfield options.
Despite creating promising chances in the first half, Nashville struggled to break down Miami’s resolute defense, particularly in the latter stages of the game. Martino’s side exhibited defensive solidity, conceding fewer expected goals in the second half compared to the first.
