Michael Massey hit a home run, and Maikel Garcia singled to bring in two runs in the seventh inning, helping the Kansas City Royals come from behind to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 on Monday night.
The game started earlier than usual, at 6:10 p.m. CDT, to avoid expected thunderstorms, but the bad weather didn’t arrive before the game ended.
The Royals struggled against Milwaukee starter Bryse Wilson, who only allowed one hit and struck out six batters in six innings. However, they managed to break through in the seventh inning against the Brewers’ bullpen.
Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro praised his team’s resilience, saying they never give up. He acknowledged that while he wished they could start strong from the beginning, their ability to perform well in critical moments is impressive.
Massey’s home run, which traveled 412 feet despite a challenging crosswind, surprised both him and his manager. Quatraro noted that hitting such a long ball in those conditions was a remarkable feat, as the stadium is known for being difficult to hit home runs in.
Koenig left the game after allowing a walk and hitting a batter with one out. Garcia then hit a single up the middle with the bases loaded against Elvis Peguero.
Brewers manager Pat Murphy praised Wilson’s performance and Gary Sánchez’s catching skills, but acknowledged that Garcia’s well-placed hit brought in crucial runs.
Ragans pitched six innings for the Royals, giving up two runs on two hits while striking out eight batters. He kept Kansas City’s offense in the game.
Anderson pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Royals, while Duffey and Smith handled the eighth inning. Perez’s throwout of Jackson Chourio attempting to steal third base helped secure the inning. Stratton closed the game with his second save.
Sánchez hit a two-run homer for the Brewers in the fourth inning, taking advantage of the wind. Ragans admitted to making a mistake with his pitch, and Sánchez capitalized on it by hitting the ball 427 feet into the left-center seats.
