Jesús Sánchez smashed a powerful solo home run and added an RBI single, contributing to the Miami Marlins’ 6-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.
Sánchez, along with Luis Arraez, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Nick Fortes, each collected two hits as Miami split the four-game series with the Cubs. Despite starting the season with nine straight losses, the Marlins have rebounded with a 6-8 record in their recent games.
“I believe we have a strong team,” Sánchez expressed through a translator. “Our performance today reflects the harmony within the team.”
Miami’s right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera (1-0) pitched five innings, allowing three runs in his second start. Despite facing some tough hits, especially in the fourth inning, Cabrera managed to maintain composure and struck out seven batters while walking three.
Manager Skip Schumaker praised Cabrera’s resilience, noting his improved maturity on the field.
On the Cubs’ side, Nico Hoerner contributed with three hits and two RBIs, while Mike Tauchman scored twice with two hits.
However, Cubs’ starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (0-3) struggled, lasting only four innings and allowing four runs on six hits. With a high ERA of 12.00 through five starts this season, Hendricks acknowledged his disappointment but aimed to focus on the positives.
Miami took the lead early in the game when Sánchez launched a massive 460-foot home run to center field off Hendricks’ fastball in the second inning, marking his first homer of the season after hitting 14 last year.
