Jose Ramirez hit a two-run home run and an RBI double as the Cleveland Guardians defeated the New York Mets 7-6 on Tuesday night, extending their win streak to five games, which is their longest of the season.
David Fry also contributed with his first career pinch-hit home run, a two-run shot in the sixth inning, for the Guardians, who lead the AL Central division. Cleveland has the fourth-best record in the majors, with 32 wins and 17 losses, and they have won six consecutive games at Progressive Field.
Ramirez has been performing well, driving in 34 runs in his last 34 games and leading the American League with 44 RBIs. With his homer in the fifth, he reached 600 extra-base hits. Ramirez, a five-time All-Star, has played his entire 12-year career with the Guardians.
“I don’t like to focus on statistics, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute,” Ramirez said through an interpreter. “Recognizing those pitches gives me confidence in my hitting.”
Jeff McNeil and Starling Marte each hit two-run homers, while Mark Vientos had a solo shot for the Mets. Despite their efforts, the Mets have lost the first two games of the series and are struggling with a 3-9 record since May 10. McNeil and Vientos scored twice each.
The Mets have faced challenges lately, losing eight of their last 11 games and dropping to a season-low six games below .500.
Nick Sandlin earned his fourth win of the season, recording two outs in the fifth inning, while Emmanuel Clase secured his MLB-leading 15th save in 18 chances, ending the game with a double play. Clase, with a 0.36 ERA, pitched for the third consecutive day.
“When Clase comes in, we know he’s going to shut it down,” Fry said. “We’re having a great time. The team spirit is high, and everyone is enjoying themselves.”
