Dana White on delay for Conor McGregor’s UFC return: ‘Money complicates a lot of things’

Dana White presents a rosy picture of the relationship between the UFC and Conor McGregor, but recent events suggest a different story.

Last year, McGregor made his return to the UFC, albeit on television screens, as he coached Season 31 of “The Ultimate Fighter” opposite Michael Chandler.

The expectation was that the two would face off shortly after the show’s conclusion, as is customary for coaches on the series. However, despite the season wrapping up in August 2023, McGregor’s comeback to the octagon seems to be on hold.

White mentioned he’s aiming for a fall return, contrary to McGregor’s earlier statement about being part of the International Fight Week pay-per-view lineup in June.

So, what’s causing the delay?

According to White, McGregor’s injury setback is one factor. McGregor suffered a leg break in July 2021 during a TKO loss to Dustin Poirier, which understandably required recovery time.

While McGregor has been active on social media, sharing training videos and expressing his desire to headline UFC 300 in April, White also points to McGregor’s substantial wealth as another complication.

Regarding McGregor’s financial status, White didn’t elaborate on how it impacts negotiations. However, he hinted at McGregor’s commitments outside of fighting, such as his role in the “Road House” remake alongside Jake Gyllenhaal.

White acknowledged McGregor’s desire to compete this year but emphasized the complexities that come with balancing his fighting career and other obligations.

McGregor still has two fights left on his UFC contract. When asked if renegotiating for more fights was a sticking point, White praised McGregor’s business acumen and professionalism throughout their partnership.

Despite occasional issues with punctuality, White commended McGregor’s commitment to making money and described him as an exceptional business partner.

So, what’s causing the delay? It appears to be a combination of McGregor’s recovery from injury, his busy schedule outside of fighting, and the intricacies of negotiating with a high-profile athlete.
