Rafael Nadal has announced his withdrawal from the BNP Paribas Open just before his scheduled first-round match at Indian Wells, citing his inability to perform at the highest level for such a significant event.

In his statement posted on Wednesday night, Nadal expressed his affection for Indian Wells, highlighting his early arrival in the desert to prepare diligently for the event. This decision comes despite his dedicated efforts in training and preparation.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion, who has had limited official matches since the 2022 US Open, recently faced a setback with an exhibition loss to fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in The Netflix Slam.
His absence from most of the previous season due to a hip injury, followed by subsequent surgery, has hindered his return to form. Although he briefly returned to action in early January, a muscle tear near his hip forced him to sit out the Australian Open and remain off the tour since then.

In the tournament’s draw, Nadal was replaced by lucky loser Sumit Nagal, who will now face Milos Raonic in the upcoming match.
