Detroit Pistons guard Cade Cunningham made a successful return on Wednesday against the Milwaukee Bucks, posting a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists in just 26 minutes. Cunningham had been sidelined since March 19 due to a collapsed lung sustained in a win over the Washington Wizards. Despite the injury, he expressed confidence in his performance, crediting the medical staff and trainers for preparing him to handle extended minutes.
Before his injury, Cunningham was averaging 24.5 points, 9.9 assists, and 5.6 rebounds over 61 games. The Pistons maintained strong form in his absence, winning eight of their 11 games, demonstrating resilience and depth. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff praised the team’s ability to adapt, saying players stepped up to be their best versions, proving vital for Detroit’s continued success.

Cunningham’s playing time in the season’s final games remains conditional on his comfort and health. While he is a leading candidate for All-NBA First Team honors, he will fall one game short of the 65-game requirement for award eligibility unless an exception is granted. Bickerstaff acknowledged the challenge posed by the rule but emphasized finishing the season on Cunningham’s terms.
The Pistons have clinched the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and their first Central Division title in 18 years. They aim to win their first playoff series since 2007-08, with Bickerstaff highlighting the growth and confidence gained by players while Cunningham was sidelined. His return adds a crucial dynamic as Detroit prepares for the postseason, combining elite talent with a well-tested, resilient roster ready for a deep playoff run.
