Bulls’ Patrick Williams to Undergo Surgery on Foot Injury, Will Miss Rest of Season

The Chicago Bulls have announced that forward Patrick Williams will be sidelined for the remainder of the season due to the necessity of foot surgery, as revealed by recent imaging. Williams has been out of action since January 25th, grappling with a bone edema in his left foot.

The decision for surgery comes after routine subsequent imaging displayed the progression of his foot stress reaction. This setback deals a blow to the Bulls, as Williams had been contributing an average of 10.0 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game across 43 appearances prior to his injury.

With Williams out, the Bulls face a challenge in maintaining their playoff aspirations over the final 27 games of the season, underscoring the importance of depth in their roster.

Initially, the Bulls had hoped for a two-week reevaluation period for Williams’ injury, intending for him to rest before gradually returning to on-court activities. However, according to remarks from head coach Billy Donovan earlier in the week, Williams continued to experience discomfort during his rehabilitation process.

The news of Williams’ season-ending surgery compounds the team’s existing injury troubles. Zach LaVine recently underwent foot surgery, ending his season, while Torrey Craig remains sidelined with a knee sprain sustained during the All-Star break. Lonzo Ball, absent since January 2022 due to knee surgeries, further adds to the Bulls’ injury woes.

This isn’t the first time Williams has faced a season-ending surgery, as he missed a significant portion of the 2021-22 season due to surgery on his left wrist.

As Williams enters the final year of his rookie contract, negotiations for an extension with the Bulls fell through before the October deadline. Consequently, he is slated to become a restricted free agent this summer, with a qualifying offer of $12.97 million awaiting him, according to Spotrac.
