The Phoenix Suns have parted ways with head coach Mike Budenholzer following a disappointing 36-46 season that saw the team miss both the play-in and playoff rounds. The move marks the third head coaching change under owner Mat Ishbia’s tenure, signaling continued instability in leadership.
In an official statement, the organization acknowledged the failure to meet expectations, emphasizing that the team’s fans “deserve better.” The firing comes amidst a turbulent stretch for the franchise, with diminishing performances year after year.
Internal Conflicts, Trade Drama, and Defensive Struggles Define Suns’ Tumultuous 2024 Season
Reports of internal conflict plagued the Suns throughout the year, with Budenholzer reportedly clashing with star guard Devin Booker. The season also featured significant trade rumors, including a near-deal that could have sent Kevin Durant to the Golden State Warriors.
Early January saw benchings of key players Bradley Beal and Jusuf Nurkic, both of whom were involved in trade talks. Nurkic was eventually traded, and the team brought in Nick Richards to address depth issues at center.

Following the trade deadline, the Suns posted the worst defensive rating in the NBA. The team’s on-court effort was visibly lacking, plagued by weak rebounding, poor transition defense, and high turnover rates.
Despite these glaring issues, Budenholzer maintained an optimistic public stance, avoiding direct criticism of his team’s play. Behind the scenes, however, relationships reportedly frayed, and a lack of cohesion among players became more apparent.
Championship Pedigree, Coach of the Year Honors, and a History of Winning Ways
Before joining the Suns, Budenholzer had a decorated coaching history, including a 2021 NBA Championship with the Milwaukee Bucks. He began his NBA coaching career under Gregg Popovich in San Antonio, later leading the Atlanta Hawks to a 60-win season and earning two Coach of the Year honors.
In Milwaukee, Budenholzer helped unlock Giannis Antetokounmpo’s MVP potential and turned the Bucks into perennial contenders. His most notable success came during the 2020-21 season when Milwaukee defeated the Suns in the Finals.
With Budenholzer gone and another underwhelming season in the books, the Suns face a pivotal offseason. Massive changes may be on the horizon, from further player trades to another coaching search. The pressure is on the front office to construct a team that can succeed around the core trio of Booker, Durant, and Beal.
Whether that includes a new system, fresh leadership, or a restructured roster remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the current formula is not delivering results.
