The San Francisco 49ers had a major scare during their joint practice with the Denver Broncos when rookie defensive lineman Mykel Williams went down with a left knee injury. Williams grabbed at his knee and remained on the field before walking off with trainers.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan later revealed that initial medical evaluations were positive, indicating a possible hyperextension rather than a serious injury. The incident occurred during a physical engagement with former 49ers first-round pick and current Broncos right tackle Mike McGlinchey.
Williams’ Debut Delayed, NFL Clarifies Smelling Salts Still Allowed for Player Use
Williams was originally scheduled to make his NFL preseason debut on Saturday, but following the injury, the team has decided to delay his first appearance. Shanahan mentioned that hyperextensions can typically sideline a player for up to a week.
As a result, Williams may return for the 49ers’ second preseason game in Las Vegas on August 16, depending on his recovery progress. The team is approaching the situation with caution to ensure the rookie’s long-term health.

There was confusion among NFL players regarding the use of smelling salts after a league memo led some to believe the product was being banned. 49ers tight end George Kittle even joked about considering retirement over the news, noting he relies on ammonia inhalants before every offensive drive.
However, the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) later clarified that players are still allowed to use smelling salts. The only change is that teams are no longer permitted to supply them.
Injury-Hit 49ers Backfield to Rely on Backups in Preseason Opener vs Broncos
The 49ers’ backfield has been depleted by injuries heading into their preseason opener. Rookie running back Jordan James broke a finger and underwent surgery, sidelining him for several weeks. This injury followed a recent return from a knee issue.
Additionally, Isaac Guerendo is out with a shoulder injury. With key players unavailable, the team is expected to rely on Patrick Taylor, undrafted rookie Corey Kiner, and recent signee Ameer Abdullah against the Broncos. Star running back Christian McCaffrey is not expected to play.
In further injury news, cornerback Darrell Luter and rookie safety Marques Sigle both left practice due to concerns over potential concussions. Fortunately, evaluations confirmed that neither player suffered a concussion and both were cleared. While the 49ers continue to manage several injury setbacks during training camp, the early prognosis for key rookies like Williams appears optimistic, easing immediate concerns for the coaching staff.
