Brock Purdy has signed a five-year extension with the San Francisco 49ers, quickly going from one of the NFL’s best bargains to one of its highest-paid quarterbacks.
The two sides agreed to the \$265 million deal last week. The 49ers shared the news on Tuesday and will hold a press conference with Purdy on Wednesday.
“Brock is a tremendous leader and a fantastic representative for the 49ers organization, and we are ecstatic to get this deal done,” general manager John Lynch said in a statement. “When we took him with the last pick in the draft, we knew he had potential to succeed in this league, but we had no idea how special of a player he would become. He has played at an exceptionally high level since taking over the starting job, and we look forward to seeing him continue to lead this team for years to come.”
Purdy had been making less than \$1 million a year during his first three seasons and was set for a raise to about \$5.2 million in 2025 due to a performance bonus from his Pro Bowl selection last season. Instead, this new contract now places him among the top 10 quarterbacks in the league in terms of pay.
After a few contract disagreements with other players in recent years, the 49ers reached this agreement with Purdy smoothly. He joined the team for the start of offseason training and now has his new contract signed ahead of on-field work starting later this month.
Purdy’s rise from the last pick in the 2022 draft to earning this major contract has been impressive. He became the starting quarterback late in his rookie season, was an MVP finalist in 2023, and led the 49ers to the Super Bowl. He then solidified his role with the team last season.
Purdy’s success helped the 49ers recover from what could have been a major setback after they traded three first-round picks to draft Trey Lance third overall in 2021. Lance struggled and was traded in 2023.

Purdy was picked 262nd in the 2022 draft, earning the title “Mr. Irrelevant.” Even before his first preseason game, coach Kyle Shanahan told team owner Jed York that Purdy was their best quarterback.
He got his opportunity to prove it late in his rookie year when both Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo suffered season-ending injuries. Purdy won the last five games of the regular season and two playoff games before suffering a major elbow injury in the NFC Championship loss to Philadelphia.
With a 108 passer rating, 16 touchdown passes, and only four interceptions that season, Purdy showed he could perform well when healthy. He followed it up with an outstanding 2023 season.
That year, Purdy had one of the best passing seasons in team history. He finished fourth in MVP voting, set a franchise record with 4,280 passing yards, and became the first 49ers quarterback in over 20 years to throw at least 30 touchdowns. He led the NFL with a 113 passer rating, and his 9.6 yards per attempt were the best by any qualified quarterback since Kurt Warner’s 9.9 in 2000.
He led comeback wins against Green Bay and Detroit in the playoffs before losing to Kansas City in overtime in the Super Bowl.
Things were tougher in 2024 as injuries to key players like Christian McCaffrey, Trent Williams, and Brandon Aiyuk affected the offense. Purdy’s passer rating dropped to 96.1, he threw only 20 touchdown passes with 12 interceptions, and failed to complete several late-game comebacks.
His performance reflected the team’s struggles, as the 49ers finished with a 6-11 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
Despite the tough season, coach Shanahan, owner York, and general manager Lynch all remained confident in Purdy and showed they were committed to keeping him as the team’s starting quarterback for the future.
