The Denver Broncos have signed running back J.K. Dobbins to a one-year deal worth $2.75 million, which could increase to over $5 million with incentives. The agreement marks a significant addition to Denver’s evolving running back rotation as they head into training camp.
Although coach Sean Payton did not officially confirm the signing during Tuesday’s minicamp, he suggested that confirmation was imminent. Dobbins had recently visited the Broncos’ facility, and contract negotiations had been ongoing since then.
Dobbins Brings Versatility and Experience Despite Injury-Plagued Career with Chargers
Prior to agreeing with the Broncos, Dobbins had been tendered a one-year unrestricted free agent offer by the Los Angeles Chargers. If he had remained unsigned with another team by July 23, the Chargers would have held exclusive negotiating rights.
Dobbins, who has shown potential when healthy, has had an injury-riddled career since being drafted in 2020. He missed all of 2021 with a torn ACL, played just one game in 2023 due to an Achilles tear, and also sat out four games last season with an MCL sprain.

His performance against Denver last year—96 yards on 25 carries—left an impression on Broncos players, including safety Brandon Jones, who expressed excitement over the addition. Dobbins’ versatility and proven productivity make him a strong candidate for Denver’s third-down role, especially with the departure of former lead back Javonte Williams.
Broncos Rebuild Backfield with Mix of Veterans, Rookies, and Emerging Young Talent
The Broncos’ backfield remains a work in progress following Williams’ exit to the Dallas Cowboys. Returning backs include Audric Estime, Jaleel McLaughlin, Blake Watson, and Tyler Badie. Of these, McLaughlin led in rushing yards and touchdowns last season but may be limited in pass protection due to his size. Dobbins’ experience and skill set could offer a more balanced option, particularly in passing situations where Williams previously excelled.
Denver also invested in the future by trading up to draft Central Florida’s RJ Harvey in the second round of the NFL Draft. Coach Payton has praised Harvey’s offseason development, suggesting he could evolve into a versatile, every-down back.
Harvey has already participated in rookie minicamp and OTAs, showing promise in early practices. With Dobbins joining the mix and Harvey emerging, the Broncos’ running game appears poised for both immediate impact and long-term potential.
