Before the 2024 NFL season even began, Bryce Huff sensed that his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles wouldn’t go smoothly. From the outset of training camp, Huff felt out of sync with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio’s scheme.

Speaking on “The SFNiners” podcast, Huff admitted he had early doubts about his fit and even desired a trade. Having spent five years in the league, Huff said he recognized when a situation wasn’t right and began to feel the disconnect almost immediately.

Injuries, Misfit Scheme, and Trade Mark Huff’s Short-Lived Stint with the Eagles

Huff had signed a lucrative three-year, $51.1 million contract with Philadelphia after a strong 2023 campaign with the New York Jets, where he posted 10 sacks and maintained an elite pressure rate. However, in Philadelphia, his production dropped dramatically.

In his first four games, he recorded just two tackles and didn’t register a sack until Week 5. Over 12 games, he totaled only 2.5 sacks and 13 tackles. His season was further disrupted by a torn wrist ligament that sidelined him for five weeks, and he was ultimately inactive during the Eagles’ Super Bowl win.

Given his limited role and injury concerns, Huff’s time with the Eagles came to an end when the team traded him to the San Francisco 49ers after June 1. The trade reunited him with defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, under whom Huff had thrived during his time with the Jets.

His return to a more familiar and suitable system signals a chance for rejuvenation and impact. Huff expressed enthusiasm about the trade and the opportunity to reset his career in a defense that better suits his strengths.

Familiar Coaches, Trusted System, and a Clear Role Fuel Huff’s 2025 Comeback Plan

In San Francisco, Huff is once again working with the coaching staff that played a key role in shaping his early success. He credits them with helping him grow from a “basic player” into one of the league’s top performers in pressure and win rate metrics.

Now back in a system he knows well, Huff is focused on regaining that form. He’s been training intensely throughout the summer with the same performance staff and plans to remain with the team through training camp, showing his strong commitment to a fresh start.

With All-Pro Nick Bosa leading the 49ers’ pass rush and the addition of first-round pick Mykel Williams, Huff is expected to settle back into a rotational pass-rushing role. This is the type of position in which he excelled under Saleh in New York.

Huff’s return to a tailored defensive scheme, combined with support from a deep and talented defensive line, sets him up for a strong 2025 season. His journey suggests that scheme fit and coaching support play crucial roles in maximizing a player’s impact.
