Five-time Pro Bowl linebacker C.J. Mosley officially announced his retirement from the NFL on his 33rd birthday through an Instagram video featuring a highlight reel of his career. In the emotional message, Mosley reflected on his football journey, stating it was time to “wake up from [his] childhood dream” and pursue new goals.
His announcement marks the end of a decorated 10-year NFL career, where he played for both the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets.
Mosley Overcame Injuries and Delivered Leadership During His Tenure With the New York Jets
Mosley’s last NFL stint was with the New York Jets, who released him on March 12, 2025. During his time with the team, Mosley served as the defensive leader and signal-caller.
However, injuries hindered his final season, missing 13 games due to toe and neck issues and eventually losing his starting middle linebacker position to Jamien Sherwood. Despite these setbacks, Mosley remained a respected figure within the organization and among fans.

Mosley signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Jets in 2019 following five impressive seasons with the Ravens. He was a standout from the start, becoming the first Ravens rookie to make the Pro Bowl and continuing with three more selections between 2016 and 2018.
His early time with the Jets was hampered by a groin injury and a pandemic-related opt-out in 2020, but he returned strong, recording 150+ tackles in three consecutive seasons from 2021 to 2023. In 2022, he reached his peak performance with a fifth Pro Bowl appearance and a second-team All-Pro nod.
From Alabama Glory to NFL Greatness Fueled by Talent and Relentless Determination
Drafted 17th overall in 2014 by the Ravens, Mosley came into the league with a decorated college résumé. Hailing from Theodore, Alabama, he was a top-rated high school linebacker who chose to play under Nick Saban at the University of Alabama.
He quickly made an impact, earning Freshman All-American honors and helping the Crimson Tide win back-to-back BCS national championships in 2011 and 2012. Mosley capped off his collegiate career by winning the prestigious Butkus Award in 2013 as the nation’s top linebacker.
C.J. Mosley retires with nearly 1,100 total tackles, 12 sacks, 12 interceptions, 10 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries, and three defensive touchdowns. More than just numbers, he was a respected leader known for his intelligence, toughness, and playmaking ability.
As he transitions into the next chapter of his life, Mosley leaves behind a legacy of hard work, perseverance, and excellence both on and off the field, challenging the next generation to define their own legacy.
