Christian Wilkins Cut by Raiders After Rehab Dispute Voids Massive Contract Guarantee

The Las Vegas Raiders officially announced the release of defensive tackle Christian Wilkins on Thursday. The move was made under the designation of a terminated vested veteran. Wilkins, a high-profile free-agent signing last offseason, had been recovering from a significant foot injury and had not returned to action. His release marks a significant shift for the Raiders’ defense heading into the new NFL season.

Contract Dispute Arises After Surgery Refusal and Voided $35.2 Million Guarantee

Sources revealed that Wilkins’ foot injury, a Jones fracture suffered in October, was central to the team’s decision. The Raiders voided $35.2 million of guaranteed money left on Wilkins’ contract on June 4, citing what they deemed a “failure to maintain his physical condition to play.” Reports suggest that Wilkins resisted undergoing a second surgery on his injured foot, which further strained relations with the organization.

Wilkins had 50 days from the June 4 voiding to request that the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) file a grievance, which they did on the final eligible day. Although the NFLPA did not comment publicly, the grievance process is now underway and could lead to a formal hearing. The dispute centers around whether the Raiders were justified in voiding Wilkins’ guaranteed salary based on the condition of his injury rehab.

Uncertainty Surrounds Wilkins’ Future After Injury-Plagued Season and Massive Contract Investment

Even before his release, there were indications from Raiders leadership that Wilkins’ return was uncertain. Head coach Pete Carroll described his rehab process as “long and challenging,” noting during spring practices that Wilkins wasn’t participating in team drills. He was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list ahead of training camp and had missed significant portions of offseason team activities and minicamp.

Wilkins signed a four-year, $110 million contract with the Raiders in 2024, with $84.75 million guaranteed—a major investment following a strong 2023 season with the Miami Dolphins, where he recorded a career-high nine sacks.

Despite showing flashes of dominance early in the 2024 season (17 tackles, 2 sacks, 6 QB hits in 5 games), his campaign was cut short due to the injury. His release leaves questions about his NFL future, as well as potential financial and legal battles ahead.
