Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson spent Sunday in the hospital after suffering a fractured orbital bone before the team’s 31-27 win against the Arizona Cardinals. The injury occurred during pregame warmups at Lucas Oil Stadium when Richardson was using a stretching band in the locker room. Head coach Shane Steichen called it a “fluke accident.” The team ruled Richardson out before kickoff, and he remained in the hospital throughout the game.

After the game, Steichen confirmed that Richardson had sustained a fracture to his orbital bone. The quarterback was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. According to The Athletic’s James Boyd, Richardson was released later that evening but continues to recover. The Colts have not yet announced how long he will be out, leaving his return date uncertain.

Injuries have continued to trouble Richardson since joining the league. The Colts selected him with the fourth pick in the 2023 draft, but he has missed 17 games and has not managed to play more than four in a row. Earlier this year, he dislocated a finger during the preseason, which contributed to him losing the starting quarterback job to Daniel Jones. Richardson holds an 8-7 record as a starter with 13 interceptions and 11 touchdowns, and his 48 percent completion rate last season was the lowest in the league.

Colts Overcome Double Injury Blow as Jones and Taylor Lead Team to Victory

Richardson was not the only player to get hurt before the game. Cornerback Charvarius Ward sustained a concussion after accidentally colliding with tight end Drew Ogletree during warmups. Video of the incident was shown on television and circulated online. Ward was ruled out for the game, adding to the Colts’ misfortune before kickoff.

Despite losing Richardson and Ward, the Colts managed to defeat the Cardinals in a close contest. Quarterback Daniel Jones completed 22 of 30 passes for 212 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Running back Jonathan Taylor carried the ball 21 times for 123 yards, including the decisive touchdown run. With Richardson recovering, Riley Leonard will serve as Jones’s backup when the Colts face the Los Angeles Chargers next week.
