The Philadelphia Eagles strengthened their defense ahead of the NFL trade deadline by acquiring outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips from the Miami Dolphins. In return, the Dolphins received a 2026 third-round draft pick. The Eagles made this their third trade in one week as they look to improve a struggling pass rush. Philadelphia will cover Phillips’ $1.5 million salary for the remainder of the season, while Miami converted $5.125 million of his base salary into a signing bonus.
Jaelan Phillips’ Career Achievements And Eagles’ Defensive Reinforcements Ahead Of Super Bowl Defense
Phillips, a 2021 first-round pick, has recorded 26 sacks over five seasons with Miami, including three sacks in nine games this season. He set a franchise rookie record with 8.5 sacks in 2021 and recorded seven sacks in 2022. Despite suffering an Achilles tear and an ACL injury in 2023, Phillips returned for the 2024 season opener. While his sack totals have varied, he ranks eighth among linebackers in pass rush win rate and 12th in pressure rate. He is scheduled to become a free agent after this season.

The Eagles, defending Super Bowl champions, have been actively reshaping their defense. Alongside Phillips, Philadelphia acquired cornerbacks Michael Carter II and Jaire Alexander last week. Currently, the Eagles rank 23rd in total defense and 24th in sacks, highlighting the need for reinforcements at the edge position. Phillips will reunite with Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, who oversaw him in Miami in 2023 when he recorded 6.5 sacks in eight games.
Philadelphia’s Edge Struggles And Miami’s Trade Strategy Highlight Roster Challenges This Season
Philadelphia’s edge rushers faced multiple challenges this season. The departures of veterans Josh Sweat and Brandon Graham, a triceps injury to Nolan Smith, and the sudden retirement of Za’Darius Smith weakened the position. The situation has improved with Graham returning from retirement, Nolan Smith nearing a return from injured reserve, and Phillips joining the rotation alongside Jalyx Hunt, Joshua Uche, and Patrick Johnson.
Phillips’ departure comes as Miami faces a difficult season and recent organizational changes, including the firing of general manager Chris Grier. The Dolphins, currently 2-7, are reportedly exploring trade options for other pass rushers such as Bradley Chubb and Matthew Judon. Despite injuries, Phillips’ past performance and potential made him a valuable trade asset, allowing Miami to gain draft compensation while reducing salary obligations.
