This summer, Geno Smith’s agents reached out to the Seattle Seahawks to see if they wanted to start talks about a new contract.
The Seahawks decided to hold off, since they had a new coaching staff and Smith was under contract for another season.
But if Smith keeps playing like he did on Sunday, when he led Seattle to a 23-20 overtime victory over New England, discussions about his future might become more complicated.
“That was a fantastic performance,” Seattle coach Mike Macdonald said Monday. “Geno’s got a bit of a chip on his shoulder, and I like it. People keep underestimating him, but he played at an extremely high level and deserves all the praise he’s getting.”
Smith had an excellent game, completing 33 of 44 passes for 327 yards. His stats could have been even better if not for several dropped passes by his teammates. It was similar to his performance in Week 2 last season, where he threw for 328 yards in an overtime win against Detroit.
“Whenever I’m in a tight situation, I’m thrilled and look forward to those moments,” Smith said. “I know I’ll have more chances like this throughout the season. The best quarterbacks find ways to win, and I want to be seen as one of them.”
Seattle is currently the only 2-0 team in the NFC West. For a team with a new coach and updated systems, learning as they go and making adjustments while leading is a positive situation to be in.
