Free-agent quarterback Jameis Winston has agreed to a two-year, $8 million deal with the New York Giants. The news, confirmed by ESPN and originally reported by Fox Sports, was officially announced by Winston on social media. In a post on his X account, Winston expressed his excitement with the caption “Start spreading the neWs” and an apple emoji, signifying his move to New York.
Giants Sign Winston but Still Seek a Long-Term Quarterback Solution in Draft
The Giants’ decision to sign Winston follows unsuccessful attempts to acquire other quarterbacks, including Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford. Rodgers, a four-time MVP, was linked to New York but ultimately met with the Pittsburgh Steelers, while Stafford secured a contract extension with the Los Angeles Rams. Winston provides the Giants with a reliable veteran quarterback who can either start or mentor a younger signal-caller.

Despite signing Winston, the Giants are still expected to add another quarterback, most likely through the draft. The team currently holds the No. 3 overall pick, which could be used to secure their quarterback of the future. Co-owner John Mara has emphasized that finding a long-term solution at quarterback remains the team’s top priority. As of now, Winston and Tommy DeVito are the only quarterbacks on the roster.
Winston’s Journey from Backup to Starter and a New Opportunity in New York
Winston started the 2024 season as a backup for the Cleveland Browns but was thrust into the starting role after Deshaun Watson suffered a season-ending Achilles injury. He had some success, leading the Browns to key wins over the Ravens and Steelers, and setting a franchise record with 497 passing yards in a game against the Broncos.
However, his performance declined, and he was benched in Week 16 after throwing eight interceptions over three games. Winston finished the season with 2,121 passing yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
Originally drafted first overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015, Winston has had a rollercoaster career. After five seasons in Tampa Bay, he played four years with the New Orleans Saints before signing with Cleveland.
Over his 10-year career, he has started 87 games, throwing for 24,225 yards, 154 touchdowns, and 111 interceptions. Winston had previously expressed interest in joining the Giants, even asking Saquon Barkley for advice on signing with the team. Now, he has the opportunity to make an impact in New York’s quarterback room.
