Quarterback Justin Fields was carted off the field Thursday morning after dislocating his right toe during the New York Jets’ training camp. Although the injury initially caused concern, the team confirmed that it was not serious and listed Fields as day-to-day.
According to a source from ESPN, Fields is expected to be ready for the Jets’ Week 1 matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The injury occurred early in practice when Fields rolled out to his right and threw an incomplete pass, then went down in visible discomfort.
Jets Relieved as Fields Avoids Major Injury, But Misses Crucial Practice Time
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn refrained from speculating on the severity of the injury, stating that he was awaiting test results. By noon, the mood in the Jets’ camp had shifted to relief.
The team, which has faced a string of unfortunate quarterback injuries in recent seasons, most notably Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles tear in the 2023 opener, was relieved to learn Fields had avoided a major setback. While the injury will sideline Fields temporarily, he is not expected to miss significant time.

Fields’ absence from training camp is particularly detrimental given his current situation. After starting only six games last season with the Steelers before being benched for Russell Wilson, Fields is looking to reestablish himself.
He is also adjusting to a new offensive system and working to develop chemistry with his new teammates. Missing practice reps at this stage is a setback, though his return in time for the regular season provides some reassurance.
Tyrod Taylor Leads Offense as Jets Stay Confident Amid Fields’ Brief Injury Scare
With Fields out, veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor has stepped in to run the offense. Taylor brings experience to the role, having made 58 career starts. The Jets’ depth chart also includes Adrian Martinez, the 2024 UFL MVP, and rookie Brady Cook, though neither has NFL game experience.
Coach Glenn expressed confidence in Taylor’s ability to keep the offense functioning smoothly, emphasizing there would be “no drop-off” if Taylor had to play in Fields’ absence.
Coach Glenn noted that Fields’ injury might have occurred when his foot was accidentally stepped on by a teammate, but emphasized the need to review practice footage for confirmation. He expressed sympathy for any injured player and underscored the emotional impact such moments have on the team.
Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million deal as a free agent, remains the clear starter for the Jets. Despite the brief scare, both the coaching staff and fans are hopeful that this minor setback won’t derail the quarterback’s crucial transition and preparation for the upcoming season.
